A Pokemon GO streamer walked for nearly 125 miles over the course of a week all in the hunt for a Shiny starter Pokemon with a Special Background, but he didn’t have the results he was hoping for. Dedication and persistence can help Pokemon GO players to achieve a lot, but in some cases, the odds are simply against them.
Pokemon GO has been celebrating its tenth anniversary, and one of the special events held to commemorate the occasion was the Ultra Unlock: 10th Anniversary Edition. From July 21 through the 27th, trainers had a chance to encounter starter Pokemon from the trio that started it all up through Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Starters encountered could not only be shiny, but also had the possibility of arriving with a team-specific Special Background, which is what kicked off this player’s search.
Pokemon GO Hunt Has a Bad Ending
Pokemon GO streamer FleeceKing took full advantage of the opportunities presented by the Ultra Unlock: 10th Anniversary Edition in an effort to find a shiny starter with a Special Background. Over the course of the week, FleeceKing was dedicated to the hunt, walking about 200 kilometers, or just under 125 miles. Fellow fans could tune in as he streamed his efforts, but at the end of it all, he revealed that he had captured a staggering 16,000 Pokemon over the course of that single week. However, not a single one of the Pokemon he encountered was a shiny starter with a Special Background.

FleeceKing did manage to collect many standard Pokemon with Special Backgrounds, but none of them were shiny. Unlike some events, Pokemon GO didn’t increase the odds of encountering shinies during the Ultra Unlock: 10th Anniversary Edition, so he was up against the standard shiny odds in Pokemon GO, on top of trying to find one with a Special Background. While he didn’t come away from the experience completely empty-handed, walking over a hundred miles in a single week without achieving his goal left him wiped out and disappointed.
While this kind of experience would be disappointing for any player, FleeceKing is no stranger to the grind. The Pokemon GO streamer has the unique distinction of being the very first person to reach level 50 in Pokemon GO, and even got the achievement recorded in the Guinness World Records. Clearly, he was willing to put in the effort, but his luck simply didn’t come through for him during the hunt.
Although the Ultra Unlock: 10th Anniversary Edition event has come to a close, Pokemon fans can still potentially grab a super rare Pokemon if they act quickly. A unique Gimmighoul with a special 10th anniversary coin has been available all month, and it also carries the potential to be shiny with a Special Background. On August 1, the Pokemon will stop appearing, and it’s believed that it will never come back, as its predecessor from 2025, a Gimmighoul with a 9 coin, hasn’t made a comeback. Gamers who haven’t grabbed one yet and don’t want to miss their chance should get to it right away. However, there’s always more on the horizon in Pokemon GO, with the major upcoming event of Pokemon GO Fest Mega Finale arriving in September.
