Pokemon Legends Z-A Officially Bans Huge Number of Pokemon

Pokemon Legends: Z-A has now banned a huge number of Pokemon from battles. The last major new release for the series before the launch of Pokemon Winds and Waves in 2027, Pokemon Legends: Z-A completely changed how battles work. From the gold standard of turn-based combat, Pokemon Legends: Z-A introduced live battles for the first time, allowing players to use moves freely and make up their strategy on the spot. This even changed how the Speed stat works, going from a crucial part of teambuilding to ensure turn priority to an afterthought, as it only reduces move cooldowns by a bit.

Given its gimmick, all Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Legends: Z-A played a big role in the hype surrounding the game, as fans could finally use old favorites and new ones after the Sun and Moon era. The game’s DLC, called Mega Dimension, added even more new Mega Evolutions to the mix and marked the return of some fan-favorites, such as Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre, and Mega Rayquaza. Pokemon Legends: Z-A hasn’t gotten new content since the DLC, but each season comes with new rules and rewards. Now, Season 14 is officially banning over 300 Pokemon.

Pokemon Fan Designs Mega Starmie Design That’s Better Than the Real Thing

One Pokemon fan imagines a new design for Mega Starmie, putting an amusing twist on the pocket monster’s well-known appearance.

It’s The End of an Era for Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s Season 14 came out on July 15, and for the first time in the game’s history, it only allows players to use 36 Pokemon out of 364 (232 in the base game and 132 in the DLC), banning the remaining 328. The original announcement shared a list of available Pokemon to use in the new Sky Battles for Season 14, and it only includes Flying-type Pokemon. Originally, the list on the official website didn’t include Vivillion despite its Bug/Flying type, but it has since been updated to add it. The list of available Pokemon is as follows:

Lumiose Pokedex

  • Fletchling
  • Fletchinder
  • Talonflame
  • Vivillon
  • Pidgey
  • Pidgeotto
  • Pidgeot
  • Gyarados
  • Swablu
  • Altaria
  • Dragonite
  • Charizard
  • Delibird
  • Scyther
  • Emolga
  • Hawlucha
  • Noibat
  • Noivern
  • Aerodactyl
  • Skarmory
  • Salamence
  • Yveltal (restricted Pokemon)

Hyperspace Pokedex

  • Farfetch’d (doesn’t include Galarian Farfetch’d)
  • Rotom (Fan Rotom only)
  • Flamigo
  • Rookidee
  • Corvisquire
  • Corviknight
  • Starly
  • Staravia
  • Staraptor
  • Squawkabilly
  • Zubat
  • Golbat
  • Crobat
  • Rayquaza (restricted Pokemon)

Much like Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s restricted Pokemon in Season 12, Season 14 only allows a limited number of powerful critters per team. With the new ruleset, players can only use one between Yveltal and Rayquaza per team, further limiting their options. In fact, of the 36 available Pokemon, several pre-evolutions wouldn’t really do well in battles. Of these, only 20 are fully evolved, and while not a full evolution, Scyther could do well due to its very high base stats, taking the total of “usable” Pokemon to 21.

Every other Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s Pokedex is unusable for the entirety of Season 14, which runs from Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at 11:00 pm PDT/Thursday, July 16, at 2 am ET to Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 6:59 pm PDT/9:59 pm ET. It’s worth noting that this only affects Ranked Battles.

However, fans who want to get previous exclusive Mega Stones if they missed them, or simply play Ranked Battles for the sake of it, will only be able to use any of these 36 Pokemon. One between Yveltal and Rayquaza is virtually mandatory, considering they are powerful Legendaries, and the rest is up to personal preference.
