Pokemon Studio’s Next Game Is Now Official

A new game is coming from Game Freak, the studio best known for Pokemon games, called Ame no Chi Hare Onna, or Rainy Day, Sunny Girl in English. The new title is a departure from the Pokemon formula, and features an interesting real-world connection players will need to take into account when playing.

While there are always new Pokemon games in production from Game Freak, the studio has created a number of other titles, as well. The most recent of these is Beast of Reincarnation, which released earlier in 2026. Beast of Reincarnation took a far more gritty and epic direction than standard Pokemon games, but Rainy Day, Sunny Girl looks to do the opposite, with a strong anime aesthetic and overall cute concept.

Game Freak Officially Announces New Pokemon 30th Anniversary Release

Game Freak confirms an upcoming release for December 2026 in honor of Pokemon’s 30th anniversary.

Rainy Day, Sunny Girl Combines Magical Girls and Weather

Ame no Chi Hare Onna, aka Rainy Day, Sunny Girl, is an upcoming mobile game for iOS and Android devices that mashes up magical girls with weather conditions. The game’s concept revolves around a group of magical weather girls who can transform with the help of companion creatures called Kumorin. These girls are tasked with destroying garbage in the city, which, if left alone, transform into sentient monsters called Yamikumo. The game utilizes real-time weather data from the real world, which alters and boosts the abilities of the girls. For example, sunny days or rainy days can boost different characters’ magic. The director of the wildly popular Pokemon Pokopia, Shigeru Ohmori, will lead the new game.

A number of characters in the main cast have already been revealed for the game. Himawari Haruto is the lead character, who is joined by Kumorin partner Arai Pon, a raccoon dog. Yuri Amanohara acts as Himawari’s ally, and fights with the help of her own Kumorin, Kon Oribe, a fox. Meanwhile, Izu Shinotsuki is one of the game’s rain girls, who is apparently in some kind of conflict with the aforementioned duo. Two other girls have also been teased, including Nono Amamiya, and Emma Ariane, an exchange student from the UK. Their exact abilities are unclear, but Emma appears to be associated with lightning conditions.

Curiously, the game also includes a laundry element that players will need to take into consideration. The cast of characters has multiple outfits they can wear, which will need to be swapped out, as they get dirty over time when worn. After the clothes are cleaned, they need to be hung up to dry, and the weather plays a role here too, as they’ll finish drying more quickly on sunny days. Much about the game is still unknown, but it’s scheduled to release during Winter 2026. The Game Freak booth at Tokyo Game Show will be highlighting the game, as well.

Though it might come as news to many gamers in the west, this isn’t the first time that Game Freak has produced a mobile game. It’s previously released titles for both iOS and Android devices since the 2010s, including Pocket Card Jockey and 2025 game Pandoland. However, it’s not clear at this time if players outside of Japan will be able to play Rainy Day, Sunny Girl. So far, no release information regarding other territories has been announced.
