Game Freak has shared some additional details on the Pokemon Winds and Waves starters, formatted in the style of Pokedex entries. While the information adds a bit of personality to the recently revealed trio, it does not address the larger questions surrounding Pokemon Winds and Waves’ starter mons.
Pokemon Winds and Waves were formally announced during the February 27 Pokemon Presents commemorating the 30th anniversary of the long-running monster-catching franchise. The Generation 10 RPGs received an elaborate reveal trailer that also introduced their starters: a Grass-type bird called Browt, a Fire-type dog Pombon, and a Water-type lizard Gecqua.

Pokemon Winds and Waves Starters Get Pokedex-Style Info Panels
Immediately following the announcement, the official Pokemon Winds and Waves website went live, offering some additional details about the upcoming titles. Among them is a trio of information panels, one for each starter Pokemon in the Gen 10 games. The panels confirm that Browt and Gecqua are both 1 foot tall, while describing Pombon as slightly taller at 1 foot 4 inches.

This Pokemon runs about energetically while photosynthesizing using the leaves on its brow. It’s lively, but it can also be a bit clumsy. |
The area below its throat glows faintly from the heat-generating organ within its lungs. This Pokémon is guileless and friendly. |
This Pokemon launches springy balls of water from its tail. Gecqua is very intelligent and maneuvers shrewdly while putting on airs. |
Browt’s listed ability is Overgrow, the long-running starter Pokemon ability that powers up Grass-type attacks when the user is in a pinch, namely when its HP falls below one-third of its maximum. In practice, that makes late-fight turns more dangerous for opponents if Browt is still standing and able to fire off Grass-type moves. Pombon, meanwhile, has Blaze, which is essentially Overgrow for Fire-type moves, boosting their power once HP drops under one-third. Similarly, Gecqua has its own move booster in the form of Torrent.
With Overgrow, Blaze, and Torrent all confirmed as part of the Pokemon Winds and Waves starters’ arsenal, it would appear that the Generation 10 games are sticking to the traditional baseline kit for first-partner mons. That direction suggests their early balance will also be close to past generations, at least until evolutions, hidden abilities, and potential new mechanics start reshaping the starters’ roles.
Mainline Pokemon RPGs have long been known for their accessibility, so there is little reason to believe any Generation 10 starter will be unviable for the entire game. That said, they may not be equally effective from the outset. Given how type weaknesses work, the opening section of Pokemon Winds and Waves could effectively present easy, medium, and hard starter options, depending on which types are hard-countered by early-game Pokemon. Be that as it may, it is too early to determine how that balance will ultimately play out. As the Generation 10 titles are based on Indonesia and Southeast Asia in general, they may feature a large number of Water-type Pokemon, potentially giving Gecqua the most competition among the starters. The newly released information panels do not provide any hints about the evolutionary lines of the three starters.
Pokemon Winds and Waves were announced with a 2027 release window. The absence of a more specific timeframe suggests a launch in the second half of the year is more likely than in the first. That would align with The Pokemon Company’s long-standing tendency to release new mainline Pokemon games during or just ahead of the holiday season.
