Pokémon and Lego’s ongoing collaboration continues, as the next major sets have been revealed. There are a few sets for making blocky Pokémon like Rayquaza, Arcanine, and Munchlax, but there are also finally some that pay homage to the human characters in the Pokémon universe, and one of those is especially cool.

The monster-specific sets are in line with the previous ones Lego has released, each including several hundred pieces which, assembled, make a large, blocky version of the Pokémon it spotlights. I’m admittedly not a huge fan of how some of these look, but I think that as long as Lego blocks primarily have pointed edges, it’ll be difficult to make magic animals out of them that look similar to their animated counterparts. I imagine the appeal for a lot of Lego models is the act of building and displaying the finished product, but this isn’t the route I would personally go for a model of my favorite ‘mon. Rayquaza, Arcanine, and Munchlax will run you $130, $110, and $70, respectively.
The one I do really like, though, is an incredibly pricey recreation of the inside of Professor Oak’s lab, in which the player chooses their starter Pokémon. The $300 model is made to look like a Poké Ball, but when you open it up, you’ll see Oak with three Poké Balls ready and waiting for a new trainer to start their journey. Also in the set is a small battle arena that includes mini figures of Red, the main protagonist of Red and Blue, and what looks like a Bug Catcher trainer battling with a Pikachu and Eevee. I’d really like more mini-figs of Pokémon trainers from across the series down the line, and hopefully they’re not all tied to giant sets that cost as much as a Switch.
Also in this next wave is an $80 oversized minifigure of Red, which I’m less enthusiastic about because the look just isn’t as clean as that of the standard mini-figure. But as some have pointed out, he’s to scale with some of the Smart Play Pokémon sets launching next month, so there’s potential for creating cute scenes there.
Most of these sets are planned to launch on August 1, but if you want just a Red minifigure, it looks like Lego will be selling those as keychains on October 1 alongside the oversized Red, though they don’t have a listed price just yet.
