Popular New Steam Game May Be Skipping Consoles Entirely

Retro Rewind: Video Store Simulator is the latest cartoon-style simulation game to take Steam by storm, but it may not make it to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, or Nintendo Switch. The game launched on Steam on March 17 and has quickly grown in popularity. Players have seemingly resonated with the game’s aesthetic of running a retro video rental store.

The nostalgia-fueled Retro Rewind puts players in charge of their very own movie rental business. Players build their shop, stock shelves with tapes, prepare snacks, charge late fees, organize inventory, set prices, and help customers find the right movie. The game’s stylized, colorful presentation reinforces its retro theme, while its systems encourage players to balance efficiency with creativity. Beyond simply running the shop, players can customize the store’s layout and look, hire and manage workers, and gradually transform a modest rental space into a bustling hub for film lovers. Retro Rewind even features seasons that will impact how customers interact with the store’s inventory. However, it seems like a large player base won’t be able to play the game anytime soon.

New Steam Game is a Roguelike With 200 Player Co-Op

There’s a new game on Steam, and it’s a rather ambitious indie roguelike that features 200 player co-op.

It Looks Like Retro Rewind Won’t Be Coming to Console

Retro Rewind: Video Store Simulator released on March 17, and at the time of writing, sits in the top 20 best-selling games on Steam. However, at least for now, it looks like PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch users might be left out of the fun. In posts shared via Retro Rewind: Video Store Simulator’s official Steam page FAQ, Blood Pact Studio, the game’s developer, indicated that there are no plans to port the game to consoles. “We are currently focused on making the best PC game possible. Please don’t expect console ports,” the developer wrote. Despite the lack of console support, Retro Rewind still looks like it could be another must-play 2026 Steam game.

The lack of console ports might come as a disappointment to some, as the game recently reached a major milestone of surpassing 100,000 copies sold in just over a week. While plans can always change, the development team of three seems focused on supporting the game’s PC version for now. Blood Pact Studio has already outlined a few of its post-launch plans for Retro Rewind: Video Store Simulator. Upcoming new features include controller support, expanded customization options, and community-voted features based on player feedback.

The decision to prioritize the PC version of the game is not all that surprising, particularly for such a small development team. Simulation-style games like Retro Rewind: Video Store Simulator often feel best on PC, where mouse-and-keyboard controls and more flexible interfaces can better accommodate detailed management systems. Porting that experience to consoles can require significant redesign work, particularly when it comes to user interfaces and control schemes. However, it could be that the upcoming controller support is a step in that direction. Shifting gears to work on a console port could also slow momentum for the game at a time when it needs it most.

Retro Rewind’s future appears closely tied to its growing PC community. While expanding to consoles could open the game up to more players, it might also turn the small development team’s focus away from providing new content for its growing player base at a pivotal time. Immediately going from supporting the game to working on a console release this early could be seen as a risky move, particularly for such a small developer. It could even pull attention away from the momentum Retro Rewind has established on Steam. Still, as that community expands and the game continues to grow in popularity, a console release could eventually make sense for the developer.
