Sony has officially confirmed two extra PlayStation Plus freebies for October 20. Both bonuses are trials rather than full games that PS Plus members can claim permanently.
Game trials are a benefit reserved for PS Plus Premium subscribers. While they typically remain available for years, few are truly permanent catalog additions, with Sony generally keeping them accessible until further notice rather than assigning fixed end dates. In this case, the company has not announced how long either of the new October 20 trials will remain available, which is consistent with its usual approach.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Game Trial Coming to PS Plus
Arriving Alongside Mortal Shell 2 Demo
The October 20 additions are Mortal Shell 2 and Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy. Both of them are fairly new releases, having originally launched in late summer 2026. Specifically, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy arrived on PC and consoles on August 27, while Mortal Shell 2 debuted seven days earlier. Both are also priced below the modern AAA average, at $49.99 for the Mortal Shell sequel and $59.99 for the latest A Plague Tale game. The latter currently has no free trial on any platform, whereas Mortal Shell 2 already offers one on PC and the Series X/S via Steam and the Xbox Store, respectively. Although technically marketed as an “open beta,” it functions as a demo and has remained available since the game’s launch.

What Is Mortal Shell 2?
Mortal Shell 2 is a standalone sequel to the 2020 soulslike from American studio Cold Symmetry. It expands the original formula into a compact interconnected open world with more than 60 dungeons, deeper weapon upgrades, and combat that is no longer restricted by a stamina meter. The possession mechanic also returns, allowing the Harbinger to inhabit fallen warriors called Shells and use their individual abilities. As a result, the sheer variety of Mortal Shell 2‘s Shells is central to its build variety.
What Is Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy?
Developed by France-based Asobo Studio, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is a prequel set roughly 15 years before 2022’s A Plague Tale: Requiem. Gameplay places a greater emphasis on direct combat, parrying, and environmental attacks, though exploration and puzzle-solving remain prominent. Stealth is the main element being deemphasized, as the massive rat swarms that previously forced the protagonists into hiding are no longer present. Asobo has said this shift is not a one-off, instead framing A Plague Tale Legacy as a preview of the series’ more action-oriented new direction.
October 20 Will Be a Busy Day for PS Plus
The free trials will launch alongside the second wave of PS Plus Extra and Premium games for October 2026, which features Mafia: The Old Country, Horizon Forbidden West, and Mycopunk. Of those three, only the Horizon Zero Dawn sequel is available on the PS4, while the remaining two are PS5 exclusives. There is also a third wave scheduled for October 27, when Poppy Playtime: Chapter 2, Monster Energy Supercross 25 – The Official Video Game, and Tales of Arise: Beyond the Dawn Edition will be added to Sony’s ever-changing subscription catalog.
