PS5 Console Update is Adding AI Feature

PS5 Console Update is Adding AI Feature

Sony has officially released a PlayStation 5 console update that adds a new AI upscaling technology named Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR). While QSSR is not intended to replace the PlayStation 5 Pro’s PSSR, it should provide great improvements to the experience on the base PS5.

The implementation of PSSR technology on the PS5 Pro has been a big success so far. Games use the AI technology to deliver smoother frame rates with better visual fidelity, and through regular console updates, Sony is still improving its capabilities. It does so by upscaling the rendered image with remarkable accuracy. But PSSR was only available on the PS5 Pro, and many gamers wanted a similar feature for the PS5.

Sony Reportedly Surveying Developers About the End of PlayStation Disc Production

Sony is reportedly talking to game developers about the company’s plan to stop producing discs for new games as player backlash continues.

PS5 Console Update Adds QSSR AI Upscaling

In a blog post, Sony confirmed that Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) has been released in a new PS5 console update. It describes it as a “new performance tier of AI upscaling.” Previously, the computational demands of PSSR had made a PS5 equivalent impossible, but thanks to “a streamlined neural network architecture” and “a hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on PS5,” it is now here.

Sony reiterates that PSSR remains the “gold standard” on PlayStation 5 Pro, but gamers should notice improvements in image detail and stability when using QSSR on the base PS5. The development has been made possible by Project Amethyst, Sony’s AI graphics collaboration with AMD. Ultimately, gamers having more graphics options on PS5 is always a good thing. It’s completely optional, so those who don’t want to use the new QSSR feature can turn it off entirely.

Right now, QSSR only supports two games: Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei. However, Sony says it “will be offered broadly to all PlayStation developers” going forward, meaning gamers should expect to see it appear in more titles in the future. It hasn’t taken long for games to adopt PSSR on PS5 Pro, so there’s little reason to believe it wouldn’t happen on the base PS5, too.

This is only the release update for PS5’s QSSR technology, so further improvements should follow in the coming months. With the price of the PS5 only increasing as the console generation goes on, it’s important that gamers get more bang for their buck.
