PS5 Could Be Getting More Expensive in At Least 1 Region

PS5 Could Be Getting More Expensive in At Least 1 Region

According to a new rumor, PlayStation 5 will be getting a substantial price increase in Europe. Released in 2020, PlayStation 5 launched right around the same time as the Xbox Series X. Despite releasing so close to Microsoft’s console, PS5 quickly established itself as the preferred platform to play the biggest releases of the current console generation. A large part of that is owed to the system’s lineup of first-party exclusives, including Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Astro Bot, and Ghost of Yotei.

This year will mark the sixth anniversary of the PS5, but it doesn’t seem that Sony will be moving on to the next generation anytime soon. Rumors had suggested a 2027 release window for Sony’s next system, but analysts are now predicting that PS6 might not arrive until 2028 or 2029. If true, that might disappoint some PlayStation fans, but the high cost of RAM could make it hard to launch a new system. PS5 was notoriously hard to find in the system’s first year, and Sony might be looking to avoid a repeat situation. On the bright side, a delay for PS6 would allow gamers to get more use out of the current system.

Silent Hill f is Getting a New Ending, But Not in the Video Game

Konami announces a new Silent Hill f ending from Ryukishi07, but fans won’t be able to experience it through the video game.

PS5’s Apparent Price Increase

In a post on Twitter, user GyoJvfr claims that PS5 will be seeing a price increase in Europe. The leaker says that the PS5 Slim will be going up to €649.99, while the PS5 Pro is jumping up to €899.99. After conversion, that translates to about $750 for the slim model, and more than $1000 for the PS5 Pro. The PS5 Pro cost €799.99 when it launched in Europe, so this would be a substantial price increase. Additionally, GyoJvfr claims that the PS5 Portal is going up to €249.99, which converts to nearly $290. The leaker has not been able to pinpoint when these price increases will take effect, but those planning to buy a PS5 in the near future might want to keep a potential price increase in mind.

In the past, the price of video game consoles used to drop over time, as demand decreased and systems became cheaper to produce. Those who waited to upgrade from the previous console generation were often rewarded with both cheaper hardware and discounted games. However, that has not been the case over the last few years, as video game manufacturers compete with other companies over resources. Between RAM shortages, tariffs, and increases in the cost of oil, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are all struggling with how to handle higher costs and lower margins. Microsoft has had to increase the price of Xbox consoles multiple times, with Xbox Series X now costing about $150 more than it did in 2020.

At this time, Sony has yet to confirm the leaked price increases. With everything currently happening in the video game industry, it’s easy to assume these price increases are correct, but there’s no way to be sure. If Sony does increase the price of the PS5 in Europe, there’s no telling whether there might be a similar price jump in North America, but it is possible. With high-profile games like Grand Theft Auto 6 and Marvel’s Wolverine coming to PS5 this year, some gamers might have to dig deep in their pockets to afford a console that can play them. Of course, others might choose to keep playing whatever system they have at the moment, whether it be a base model PS5, or even a PS4. All of these increases are making it much harder to justify purchases, and a lot of people might get priced out of the hobby as a result.
