Resident Evil 2 is Technically Getting Another Remake, But With a Big Asterisk Attached

The latest Capcom Spotlight was relatively light on reveals, but the company did show off its new take on Resident Evil 2, being made in conjunction with Bandai Namco. The original Resident Evil 2 earned widespread critical acclaim and is considered by many to be one of the best survival-horror games of all time. The Resident Evil 2 remake, released over 20 years after the original, is similarly praised as a masterpiece of its genre.

Considering how popular Resident Evil 2 is, it’s really no surprise how often Capcom goes back to the game’s locations and characters. In fact, the recently released Resident Evil Requiem is all about RE2 nostalgia, with Leon S. Kennedy and Sherry Birkin both in the game, and Leon actually making his way back to the infamous Raccoon City Police Department. Now it seems Resident Evil 2 fans have even more to look forward to, as Capcom is giving them yet another way to revisit the classic game.

New Resident Evil Games for the Next 3 Years Just Leaked Online

A reliable Resident Evil insider reveals what the future has in store Capcom’s long-running survival-horror franchise.

Resident Evil 2: Arcade is Yet Another Way to Experience the Classic Game

A new Resident Evil 2 light-gun arcade cabinet based on the 2019 remake is being made in collaboration with Bandai Namco. The game will be tested in Japan this month, though it’s unclear when or if it will make its way elsewhere. The game appears to be yet another remake of Resident Evil 2, but this time in the style of an on-rails shooter. Hardcore Resident Evil fans will know that this isn’t exactly an original idea.

In the 2000s, Capcom released Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles and Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles for the Wii. The latter was an on-rails shooter that depicted the events of Operation Javier as mentioned in Resident Evil 4, and also retold the Resident Evil 2 story without separating Leon and Claire and making various other changes to make the plot more cohesive.

Resident Evil 2: Arcade boasts “floor jets” and “floor vibration technology.”

The footage of the Resident Evil 2: Arcade game shown in the Capcom Spotlight effectively looks like a fancier take on The Darkside Chronicles‘ RE2 segment. It was shown to have co-op support with Leon and Claire as the two playable characters, but whereas The Darkside Chronicles was based on the OG RE2, the new arcade cabinet is based on the Resident Evil 2 remake. It’s possible that the game could eventually get ported to other platforms, but it’s an arcade exclusive for now.

Resident Evil didn’t exactly make a big splash at the Capcom Spotlight show. Besides showing off Resident Evil 2: Arcade, Capcom talked about a Resident Evil: Requiem experience coming to Universal Studios Japan, 30th anniversary concerts, and the fact that there is currently a Generation Pack bundle that collects Resident Evil 7, Village, and Requiem for a limited time.

With Resident Evil‘s 30th anniversary coming up on March 22, some fans may understandably be disappointed at the franchise’s representation at the Capcom Spotlight. After all, it was teased that some kind of Resident Evil project involving Sheva Alomar was potentially in the works, and some may have expected to see that revealed at the event. But while Capcom itself is keeping quiet about the future of Resident Evil, leakers have spilled the beans about what we can expect.

According to the latest leaks and rumors, Resident Evil – Code: Veronica is getting a remake in 2027, to be followed by a Resident Evil Zero remake in 2028 and finally Resident Evil 10 in 2029. A full-blown Resident Evil 1 remake is also believed to be in development, but fans should keep their expectations in check until they get official word from Capcom.
