Resident Evil Requiem Dev Reveals Player Preference Data for First and Third-Person

Resident Evil Requiem Dev Reveals Player Preference Data for First and Third-Person

Resident Evil Requiem offers the option to swap between first and third-person perspectives, and Capcom has now revealed data about player preferences. Resident Evil Requiem was released earlier this year, and the game’s campaign features two characters that are controlled at different points: Grace Ashcroft and Leon S. Kennedy. Grace’s sections focus more on survival horror, while Leon’s are action-based.

When Resident Evil Requiem was first announced, some fans were worried that the split between Leon and Grace’s different play styles might make the game feel uneven. However, those fears proved to be for naught; Resident Evil Requiem has been critically well-received, and the general response has been very positive since launch. The game’s developers offered the best of both worlds for new and returning players, which is fitting given that this year marks the franchise’s 30th anniversary.

Some Resident Evil Requiem Fans Think Leon Married Ashley

Fans speculate that Leon S. Kennedy’s wife in Resident Evil Requiem is none other than Ashley Graham, the president’s daughter.

Resident Evil Requiem Perspective Preferences

In a new Denfaminicogamer interview, Resident Evil Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi offered information about the perspective options players are choosing. According to Nakanishi, 90% of players chose the third-person perspective while using Leon. Meanwhile, 60% of players used first-person during Grace’s segments. Since Resident Evil Requiem attempts to marry the combat of action-heavy games like Resident Evil 4 with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard‘s focus on survival horror, it makes a lot of sense that players are making that choice. Fans are used to playing as Leon in third-person, so it’s something they’ve largely decided to stick with.

Player preferences don’t just boil down to the character, however. Nakanishi says that players in Japan tend to prefer Resident Evil Requiem in third-person, compared to those in other regions. Given that Resident Evil started in third-person, it’s possible these are players who have been with the series from the early days. However, the director did not offer any kind of elaboration on the data. Meanwhile, it seems PC players prefer first-person compared to those on consoles. Given the history of first-person games on PC, it makes sense that players on the platform might prefer it.

Since 2017, Resident Evil fans have debated between first and third-person perspectives, and which option is best for the series. Capcom’s decision to offer both from the start with Resident Evil Requiem has clearly paid off. It seems some players like to use both, while others stick with one specific option. It remains to be seen what Capcom will do with the series in the future, but it’s hard to imagine the company moving away from this strategy. The series appeals to a wide variety of players, and offering multiple options ensures that everyone is happy, from those who have been there since the beginning to more recent fans.

Following the game’s release in February, Resident Evil Requiem has shipped more than 7 million units worldwide. That number makes it the fastest-selling entry in the series, and publisher Capcom has been off to a very strong start in 2026. In addition to Resident Evil Requiem, Pragmata has also found a passionate audience, with more than one million copies shipped. Pragmata sales probably won’t reach the same heights as Resident Evil Requiem, but it’s a promising start for a new property.
