Though digital distribution remains as popular as ever, physical game sales of Resident Evil Requiem have held strong outside the US, according to financial analysis data posted on social media. Resident Evil Requiem has been on the market for nearly six months as of this writing.
Resident Evil Requiem is the ninth mainline entry of Capcom’s long-running survival horror series. Additionally, Resident Evil Requiem is the first game in the franchise to launch on PlayStation, Nintendo, and Xbox consoles from day one. Due to the game’s success, Capcom stated that story DLC for Resident Evil Requiem was in development. However, with Resident Evil Veronica set to launch sometime in 2027, previous rumors stated that RE9‘s story DLC may not launch until sometime afterward.
Resident Evil Requiem Physical Game Sales Holding Strong Amid Changing Landscape
Although Resident Evil Requiem has sold millions of units across multiple platforms, new data indicates that physical sales continue to be a strong point for the franchise. According to Ampere Analysis data posted by The Game Business co-founder Christopher Dring on Twitter, physical game sales of Resident Evil Requiem remained strong outside the US. While only 22% of Resident Evil Requiem‘s game sales in the US were physical, that number spiked to 55% in France and 51% in Capcom’s home country of Japan. Though digital sales still made up the majority in Australia and the UK, the respective physical sales percentages still tallied at a respectable 43% and 40%. The estimated sales were tallied up to the end of June 2026.

It’s no secret that digital games are more profitable than physical copies for both game developers and publishers alike. Although storefronts such as Steam and the PlayStation Store may take a cut of the money made from third-party digital games sold, printing and shipping physical games on discs or game cards each come with manufacturing costs. Also, third-party physical games may only make half as much profit once licensing and manufacturing fees are considered. Despite the fees incurred from printing and distributing physical copies, Capcom made quite a profit in Japan and France off of physical sales. Dring stated, in short, that each market was different in how it handled the transition over to digital media.
Although the gap between physical and digital game sales can differ between each country, digital game sales still maintain a strong and growing foothold across the entire gaming industry. For example, Square Enix stated in its Q1 2027 financial report that digital game sales were dominant across all territories in which the company has a presence. 90% of Square Enix’s games sold worldwide from April 1, 2026, to June 30, 2026, were digital, with an estimated 6.65 million digital units sold compared to approximately 730,000 physical units.
Though PlayStation has notoriously declared it would be going exclusively digital starting in 2028, Ampere Analytics’ data on Resident Evil Requiem is a clear sign that some gamers are not ready to give up physical media just yet. But with the clock ticking on physical PlayStation game discs, time will tell how physical and digital game sales will look in future reports.
