Rockstar Games has addressed how microtransactions factor into the upcoming open-world release of Grand Theft Auto 6, and the answer should satisfy most fans. It’s hard to ignore the context here, though, where Rockstar has made and continues to make a fortune off of microtransactions in GTA Online.
In fact, the profits of GTA Online are likely why GTA 6 is looking so good. This is probably the most “next-gen” any game has looked in a long time, and that’s because Rockstar has had a reliable, massive revenue stream for years. There was no need for Rockstar to rush GTA 6, with the company seemingly dodging some of the industry’s worst practices (although it has a $100 Ultimate Edition) when it comes to monetization.
GTA 6 Features No Microtransactions and No GenAI
Kinda Funny Games was on the short list of those trusted to visit Rockstar North in Edinburgh, Scotland, where they spoke with co-studio head Rob Nelson. Nelson was asked if players would be able to spend any real-world money in the game or do any kind of interactions, and speaking on behalf of Rockstar, he responded that there would be “no monetizations” present in the game. Given the initial asking price (and the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition selling so well), this is no doubt music to many ears. Nelson was also asked about generative AI usage in the game, and Nelson’s response was a simple yet effective, “No.”

It seems Nelson was very forthcoming with Kinda Funny Games, as it’s nice to see a developer answer these questions so forthrightly, and that’s self-evident in another question. Kinda Funny Games asked Nelson about GTA 6 Online, the next iteration of the multiplayer component, and was told Rockstar wouldn’t talk about that. Rockstar has been very clear that GTA 6 is a single-player game and that GTA 6 Online, if such a thing exists (corporate winkwink), is something else entirely, and Rockstar is only focused on this launch for now.
The safest assumption here, though, is that GTA 6 Online is coming sometime in 2027. It may be a few months later, but just like GTA Online made massive amounts of money, the same can be said of the initial single-player game and GTA 6 Online when it follows. In truth, GTA 6 Online will pay the bills for Rockstar and Take-Two for a long, long time, so it’s not rushing—the smart move. Between the previews and Netflix Extended Look, fans of the franchise have gone from zero to 200 MPH, quickly becoming inundated with information on the next generation of Grand Theft Auto.

And while there’s sure to be some dissenting opinions, it’s clear that GTA 6 has earned its title as the most anticipated game of 2026. It stands to reason that GTA 6 will be played heavily in November, and December, and January, and 2027, and if it sells the same way GTA 5 did, for years to come.
