Grand Theft Auto 6 will introduce players to a new criminal duo when Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos arrive in Vice City on November 19. The upcoming Rockstar Games release will feature plenty of bank robberies, drug trafficking, and other criminal activities, but Jason and Lucia’s personal lives will be just as important as the trouble they get into. Both characters have their own reasons for pursuing a better life, and Rockstar’s latest comments suggest their individual personalities will play a major role in GTA 6.

GTA 6 Trailer 3 suggests that Jason is a veteran who left the Army on bad terms when Lucia comes back into his life after a stint in prison. Although both characters eventually find themselves involved in Vice City’s criminal underworld, their different experiences could help make their partnership more complicated than a straightforward story about two criminals working together.

GTA 6 Devs Openly Discuss Jason and Lucia

Rockstar Games senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries recently explained how the studio approached Jason and Lucia in an interview with LOVE Magazine. According to Humphries, Lucia was created as someone who wants a better life and refuses to let obstacles stop her from getting it. He also described her willingness to go on the run and push a crime spree to its limits without worrying about the consequences as both hopeful and naive. GTA 6 writer Alexa D’Agostino added that she drew inspiration from women she knew, including her immigrant mother, when writing Lucia, specifically stating:

“When you are focusing on writing a fully realized person with their own wants, you’re getting to get something perfectly imperfect, with clichés, but also undeniably real. That’s how you get a woman that can stand tall next to the likes of Arthur Morgan and Niko Bellic.”

Jason’s motivations are less straightforward. Humphries explained that Rockstar did not intend to make a broader statement about social class or failed social mobility through Jason’s background, despite his time in the Army. Instead, his criminal behavior is partly shaped by his material circumstances, with players left to decide how much those circumstances influence his choices. Jason grew up around criminals before joining the Army in an attempt to move beyond his troubled teenage years. He eventually returned to the Leonida Keys near Vice City, where he now works for local drug runners, leaving him in a familiar world of crime despite his attempt to move on.

Humphries offered another detail that could shape how players interpret Jason throughout GTA 6: “A lot of this is up to the player to decide whether he needs to do that, or if it’s a choice he makes because he’s wired differently from other people.” The comment leaves room for different interpretations of Jason’s personality, but it does not confirm any particular explanation for his behavior.

The contrast between Jason and Lucia could make GTA 6‘s story more compelling as their criminal activities become increasingly dangerous. Lucia’s determination to escape her circumstances gives her ambitions a clear motivation, even when her decisions become reckless, while Jason’s background provides context without necessarily excusing his actions. As aforementioned, D’Agostino also specifically compared Lucia’s potential to stand alongside memorable Rockstar protagonists like Arthur Morgan and Niko Bellic. In other words, expectations are sky-high, and Rockstar is well aware of what players expect when they take their first step inside Vice City.
