With Grand Theft Auto 6 releasing next month, Rockstar Games is giving fans more reasons to look beyond Leonida’s open world and into the people who will inhabit it. The upcoming open-world crime game has already drawn plenty of attention for its unique worldbuilding features, its new take on Vice City, and so much more. However, GTA 6‘s story could be just as important as the world surrounding it, especially when it comes to understanding why its main characters make the choices they do.
Rockstar has spent decades building Grand Theft Auto around criminal characters who find themselves caught between their circumstances and their ambitions. Some protagonists want to escape their past, while others see crime as their best chance at getting ahead. Those motivations can make the series’ characters more complicated than their actions initially suggest, leaving players to decide whether their choices are understandable, justified, or simply the result of who they are.
GTA 6’s Jason is “Wired Differently”
That question is particularly relevant to GTA 6 protagonist Jason Duval, whose background has played a key role in shaping his life in Leonida. In a new interview with LOVE Magazine, Rockstar senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries explained why Jason’s criminal behavior should not be reduced to a single explanation. Asked whether the character was intended as a commentary on social class and failed social mobility (as he was previously in the army), Humphries said, “We didn’t want to make any kind of statement with Jason’s backstory.”
Find the odd one out before the timer hits zero.
He also explained that Jason turns to activities like drug trafficking and bank robbery because of his “material circumstances,” while leaving players to decide how much those circumstances influence his decisions. Humphries made that distinction especially clear when discussing the decisions Jason makes throughout GTA 6:
“A lot of this is up to the player to decide whether he needs to do that, or if it’s a choice he makes because he’s wired differently from other people.”
Jason’s history helps explain how he ended up in his current situation. After growing up around criminals, he spent time in the Army in an effort to move beyond his troubled teenage years. However, he eventually returned to the Leonida Keys just outside Vice City, where he now works for local drug runners. His path suggests someone who has tried to move on from his past without entirely escaping it, although the interview does not address how Jason himself sees the situation.
What’s noteworthy is the phrase “wired differently,” as some fans have begun to think that Jason may be GTA 6′s first neurodivergent protagonist. That ultimately remains to be seen, but many have taken his monotone voice (that many folks hated on since day one), the way he behaves awkwardly in GTA 6‘s Extended Look on Netflix, and a few other possible indicators to think that “wired differently” may be a little more literal than believed at first blush. Others have used the specific word “wired” to also suggest that Jason is a cop in GTA 6, bringing up that old theory that does seem less likely by the day.
Either way, Jason’s background makes for an interesting counterpart to Lucia Caminos, whose own ambitions will help drive the story of GTA 6. Rockstar has described Jason as someone who wants an easy life even as things become increasingly difficult, while Lucia is determined to build a better future for herself. How their different outlooks influence their criminal partnership remains to be seen, but Jason’s background suggests his decisions may not always be as straightforward as they appear.
