Rockstar Games Officially Comments on GTA 6’s Realism + Immersion

GTA 6 is shaping up to be Rockstar Games’ most realistic open-world game yet, but that doesn’t mean the developer wants to recreate every aspect of real life. Rockstar has spent years pushing the boundaries of what players can do in its games, with Red Dead Redemption 2 setting a particularly high bar for immersive environments, character interactions, and attention to detail. With GTA 6, the studio is taking many of those ideas even further.

However, creating a believable world is only part of the challenge. GTA 6 also needs to be entertaining, and many players hate checklists in open-world games, after all. Rockstar has already revealed various systems involving Jason and Lucia’s daily lives, including eating, exercising, and changes to their physical appearances. Now, Rockstar has offered some additional insight into how it decides which realistic features belong in the final game.

Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has explained that realism isn’t always the priority in GTA 6, with the developer sometimes choosing convenience over authenticity to keep gameplay enjoyable. Speaking with Love magazine, Nelson discussed the importance of immersion and why even GTA 6‘s highly detailed gameplay mechanics can become a problem if they interfere with the overall experience. According to Nelson, Rockstar’s approach is to make the world convincing without allowing realism to dictate every design decision:

“Sometimes you need things to feel realistic to help with that sense of immersion, and conversely, sometimes you need to forego realism in favor of what will be most convenient for the player—realism can help greatly with immersion, but too much can feel tedious, so we try to find the right balance.”

One particularly interesting example is GTA 6‘s vehicle refueling system. Rockstar has confirmed that players will need to refuel their vehicles, introducing another element of everyday life into the open world. However, the process involves a painless quick-time event, with Nelson previously suggesting that the interaction is brief enough to avoid becoming an inconvenience. He even joked that it’s so quick players can’t complain, although he acknowledged that Rockstar would ultimately have to see how people respond.

Rockstar has also confirmed that GTA 6 previously featured a more elaborate grocery shopping system, although the developer eventually decided against including it. At one point, Jason and Lucia could purchase groceries and bring them home to restock their refrigerator. However, Nelson explained that the mechanic introduced unnecessary complications, prompting Rockstar to simplify the system. Eating and visiting restaurants still have a purpose in GTA 6, particularly with the game’s expanded health and fitness mechanics, but players won’t need to worry about maintaining a fully stocked fridge. It’s a good example of how Rockstar can retain the meaningful parts of a feature without keeping every realistic detail attached to it.

The same philosophy appears to extend beyond individual mechanics in GTA 6. Nelson has explained that Rockstar sometimes incorporates details from the real world to strengthen its storytelling, while other elements are intentionally left out because they don’t contribute to the experience. Ultimately, the objective is to make players feel connected to GTA 6‘s open world of Vice City, its inhabitants, and the story of Jason and Lucia (not to simulate every responsibility that comes with living there).
