Rockstar has commented on the physical code-in-box version of Grand Theft Auto 6, assuring fans that they can still access some premium content even if they purchase the Standard Edition. Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to hit shelves on November 19 and will come in two separate editions, Standard and Ultimate. Fans can also purchase a physical box that contains a digital code rather than a disc.
Rockstar now says that “physical editions become available for shipping and pickup from retailers starting on November 12.” According to the company, this will ensure all players can benefit from the pre-load period, which begins on November 10. Rockstar has also recently confirmed GTA 6‘s file size, asking players to have at least 212 GB of free space to install the game. The company has now shared additional information for those who have purchased the physical box.
In a new statement published on Rockstar’s support website, the company said, “A physical version of the Grand Theft Auto 6: Ultimate Edition is not available, but physical Standard Edition owners can purchase the Ultimate Edition Upgrade from the PlayStation or Microsoft stores after their Standard Edition code has been used.” In other words, Rockstar has assured players, including those who purchase the code-in-box edition, that they can unlock GTA 6‘s paywalled content later by paying an additional $20 fee.

Needless to say, those who purchase either edition after GTA 6‘s official global release might not be able to access the pre-order bonuses, including the ’55 Vapid Stanier Sedan and Garage, outfits and hairstyles, exclusive weapon pattern, and one month of GTA+ Membership. Rockstar’s statement makes it clear that the $20 upgrade will include the following content:
- ’95 Grotti Cheetah
- Hawk & Little Morgan Revolvers
- Personalized Weapon Variants
- Vice City Styles
- Jason’s Safehouse Vehicles
- Ganado Retro Build, Rideout Customs Mod Shop
- Sara’s Unisex Salon
- Shitzu Squalo
- Stock 305 Clothing Store
- ’67 Vapid Dominator Buggy and Garage
- Electric Fang Tattoo Parlor
- One-Eyed Willie’s Mod Shop
- Goodtime Gear
- PTT Youngin$ Compound
- Classic Car Collection
Rockstar’s comments on GTA 6‘s physical edition have sparked a new wave of discussion about the code-in-box approach. Several fans have complained that there is no point in selling an empty box, while others wish the company had at least included a disc that required a download. However, the decision has been made, and Rockstar’s latest statement reaffirms its stance by repeatedly saying, “A disc will not be included in the box.”
Regardless of these controversies, all eyes remain on November 19 and GTA 6‘s long-awaited release. Several reports suggest that Rockstar has made close to $800 million from GTA 6 pre-orders. If true, this would make it one of the highest-grossing pre-ordered titles in history, alongside games like Cyberpunk 2077.
