Most people could agree that Rockstar Games has created some of the most memorable protagonists out there over the years. Of course, some of them stand out more than others, but Arthur Morgan and Niko Bellic are certainly unforgettable. The first one is the protagonist of Red Dead Redemption 2, while the latter is the star of Grand Theft Auto 4. Although they come from completely different worlds, they still remain fan-favorite characters. And since they are so iconic, it makes sense why Rockstar brought up their names in the conversation about Grand Theft Auto 6‘s Lucia.
Alexa D’Agostino, one of the writers at Rockstar, recently explained in an interview with LOVE Magazine that when creating a character, it’s important to aim to create a complete person; someone with their own desires and goals and everything that makes them “perfectly imperfect.” She specifically mentioned Arthur and Niko and how Lucia can stand tall beside them. This immediately raises the question of what Arthur and Niko have in common and what qualities they might be sharing with one of the protagonists of Grand Theft Auto 6.
Arthur Morgan and Niko Bellic Wanted More Than Their Criminal Lives
At first glance, one might find it easy to point toward crime as an obvious connection between Arthur and Niko, but maybe it’s more about the life each one of them wants to build rather than their actions. According to Rockstar’s official description, Niko arrives in Liberty City in hopes of building a new life for himself. Yes, he ends up surrounded by crime and violence, but it’s that dream he has that drives him forward. This is definitely something that we can also notice in Lucia’s story in GTA 6, as she is faced with the same challenge.
According to Rockstar Games, Lucia wants to have the good life her mother dreamed about back in Liberty City more than anything else. However, just as it happened with Niko in GTA 4, this desire will probably clash with the criminal life she leads. So, it’s safe to say that in both cases, there’s a deep and personal dream to create a better life for themselves, which seems to be something that most people are aiming for even in the real world.
Lucia Has Something Neither Arthur Nor Niko Had
Of course, Grand Theft Auto 6 is most probably not aiming to create a copy of either Arthur or Niko, but it certainly doesn’t need to in order to give Lucia’s character more depth. In fact, it’s important that Lucia has her own unique dreams and personality despite how successful the stories of her predecessors were. Although we don’t know every detail about Lucia yet, we know that she will not go through the central conflict of the game alone, which already gives the studio a fresh approach to building her as a character.
Put the consoles in the correct order.
One’s dynamic with another person is a great way to present someone’s flaws, character, and goals. We could compare it to the way Arthur’s personality shines through the way he interacts with the other members of the Van der Linde gang, although this relationship is not quite like the one between Lucia and Jason.
Lucia Will Probably Give Players More Than They Initially Expect
Perhaps the biggest thing Arthur Morgan and Niko Bellic share is that there’s a lot more to them than it may initially seem. Arthur starts off his journey as an experienced outlaw who has spent most of his life among criminals, but as the story progresses, we quickly discover that he’s a person with values who is loyal to those he considers family. Similarly, Niko may initially seem like just another criminal, but the player’s view becomes much more complicated once the reason behind his arrival in Liberty City is revealed. This is probably what makes these characters so iconic in the first place.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently scheduled to release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
People tend to root for the underdog; the one who comes from a background of troubles and suffering but does their best to survive in this cruel world. Lucia already seems like she could fit easily into this narrative, as Rockstar revealed that she was taught to fight from a very early age, and fighting for her family was exactly the reason why she ended up in prison. Even without knowing further details, we could assume that her circumstances before the events of GTA 6 were not pleasant.
Considering the time she spent in Leonida Penitentiary, her history, and her determination to change the direction her life has taken, it seems like she already has a great foundation for an underdog. It will also be interesting to see how much Lucia’s time in prison has changed her. This is a major part of her life, and it would be strange not to have influenced her in any way. In any case, even this event alone could be enough to make her story different than anything we have seen before, while still giving her the perfect type of troubled history that made characters like Arthur so memorable.
