GTA 6 is giving players a new way to shape protagonists Jason and Lucia beyond simply deciding how much destruction they cause thanks to the “Criminal Profile” system. Rockstar Games is introducing a Criminal Profile system that tracks how each character approaches crime, although it is not designed to work like Red Dead Redemption 2‘s Honor system. Instead of watching a meter constantly move between two extremes, GTA 6 assigns characters to specific named states based on their behavior.

The Criminal Profile system in GTA 6 includes various classifications for how players approach crime. For example, if someone is very methodical and effective at store robberies and other crimes, then they’ll likely earn the Professional classification. That changes if players tend to kill everyone, play it safe, and/or be as destructive as possible, with violent states including aggressive, Violent, and Psycho. As such, it’s more detailed than a traditional morality system in that regard, and it goes to wild extremes. There is even another state beyond Psycho, where the Criminal Profile icon itself begins to crack and eventually shatters.

GTA 6’s Criminal Profile System Explained

The beyond-Psycho state could be one of the most interesting parts of GTA 6′s Criminal Profile system, according to Vice’s breakdown of the new GTA 6 feature. Reaching it is reportedly irreversible for the remainder of a playthrough, meaning players cannot simply change their behavior later and return the character to a previous state. Jason and Lucia become what GTA 6 players want them to be and how they play them. Keeping that in mind, GTA 6 is therefore potentially making some criminal behavior carry consequences that last well beyond a single mission or rampage.

Jason and Lucia also have separate Criminal Profiles in GTA 6, opening up some interesting possibilities for how players approach the two protagonists. One character can remain a careful professional who avoids unnecessary casualties, while the other can become an increasingly violent criminal. Players can improve their Professional status by showing restraint, such as completing a robbery without needlessly killing or injuring people, giving GTA 6 another reason to approach certain situations with some degree of control.

Rockstar is also apparently making the system optional in a practical sense. GTA 6 players who do not want constant Criminal Profile notifications can disable them, meaning the feature does not necessarily have to dominate the experience. Rockstar has also stressed that there is no correct way to play, even though a character’s Criminal Profile can reportedly influence certain elements of the story and GTA 6‘s Vice City. So, there’s influence regardless, but the actual Criminal Profile can be disregarded.

That approach could make GTA 6‘s Criminal Profile system one of the game’s more interesting additions for players who enjoy role-playing and the more lived-in vibe of GTA San Andreas. The series has never exactly struggled to let players turn a quiet afternoon into a citywide disaster, but GTA 6 will expand on players’ freedom to do just that. The difference is that Jason and Lucia may now remember those choices in ways that make their criminal careers feel more distinct, especially if players push one of them far enough that there is no going back.
