Rockstar Officially Details How GTA 6 Differs From Other Open-World Games

Open-world games have gotten much bigger over the years, but a bigger map does not necessarily make a game better. Even then, it is easy to see the boundaries between a story mission, a side activity, and the rest of the world, even when a game gives players a huge amount of freedom. Grand Theft Auto has always been good at making Vice City, Liberty City, and Los Santos feel like places worth exploring, but Rockstar wants to knock down those open-world game barriers completely in Grand Theft Auto 6.

Rockstar has already spent plenty of time talking about the size of Grand Theft Auto 6‘s map. Vice City is twice the size of Los Santos, while the overall map is reportedly three times the size of the playable area in Red Dead Redemption 2. The more interesting part, however, is what Rockstar is actually trying to do with all that space. The studio does not simply want players to have more things to find; it wants the world to behave consistently whether GTA 6 players are following the story or doing something completely unrelated.

GTA 6’s new NPC tech will no doubt influence how fans enjoy and interact with its beaches.

Rockstar Wants GTA 6’s Open World and Story to Be Harmonious

Grand Theft Auto 6‘s open world is doing something Rockstar has never done before: trying to remove the line between the game and the world itself. Phil Hooker, the head of development at Rockstar Games, explained in a statement to the New York Times that the studio wanted the experience to feel the same during missions and while simply exploring, saying, “We wanted, whether you’re on mission or off mission, for it to feel the same so you wouldn’t really see the structure of the game underneath.” That idea helps explain why Rockstar has focused so heavily on seemingly small interactions throughout Grand Theft Auto 6.

Jason can eat an apple, open a refrigerator, drink a smoothie for a temporary health boost, pet a pedestrian’s dog, and visit a gym where working out actually involves managing the character’s movements. Lucia may go shopping, pick up some food, rob a store, escape on a motorcycle, and go home and doom scroll. Accomplishing this naturally within the confines of GTA 6‘s story, open-world structure, and general gameplay was a challenge, with studio co-lead Rob Nelson saying,

“All of it is a bit of a moonshot. Having that all work dynamically has been incredibly challenging.”

That’s not to say that GTA 6‘s gameplay won’t have traditional missions and scripted moments, with Rockstar acknowledging it has to balance player freedom and the story it wants to tell, but the studio wants player freedom and storytelling to be a cohesive whole. Fans know that open-world game narratives often lack urgency because they go off, do whatever they want, and never progress the story, but Rockstar wants that freedom and the story to be more interconnected on a macro level.

A good example of this is how GTA 6’s social media posts can lead to in-the-game-world interactions.

On a micro level, it means that seeing NPCs act differently in a mission outside it is something every Rockstar dev pays attention to; the New York Times noted that Nelson often pointed out minor details it didn’t notice as areas where Rockstar is still working to polish that experience, something like an NPC acting in an odd way that wouldn’t happen during open-world exploration. In short, Rockstar wants GTA 6 to have complete ludonarrative harmony, something not really ever seen in an open-world game before, by nature.
