While it’s not explicitly outlined in Rotwood, players will be relieved to know that it is possible to heal their character in the game. In Klei Entertainment’s roguelike adventure, players will be sent through a number of challenging dungeons to take on various corrupted beasts, making the maintenance of player health all the more crucial to progress through the game.
The tutorial components of Rotwood leave out some essential game features that players will need to know, including the healing mechanics, how health potions work, and if you can refill them. While it is possible to replenish your health, you’ll need to jump through a few hoops to make it happen.
Rotwood: How To Change Armor & Weapons
Surviving in Rotwood requires sufficient equipment, but changing them isn’t the most straightforward process.
How to Heal in Rotwood
You only get a single health potion for each expedition in Rotwood. It can be consumed for 500 health points by holding down Q on your keyboard. If you are playing the game with a controller, the heal button is L1 and LB on PlayStation and Xbox, respectively.
Get clear of enemies before using the health potion because it has around a second of animation time. There is no way to quick-heal in
Rotwood
. You do not want to get hit while healing.
There are also a few powers (perks) in Rotwood that let you heal through combat. For example, Concentrated Cure heals every time you kill an enemy or break something with a Focus Attack. There is another perk that heals every time you quick-rise.
Both powers, however, only heal a considerably small amount. You will still have to rely on health potions to come back from the brink of death.
How to Refill Your Health Potion in Rotwood
Unlike other dungeon crawlers where you can switch off your brain, Rotwood requires players to pay close attention and dodge their way out of danger. This is because healing is a luxury in Klei Entertainment’s latest offering. While there are a few ways to refill your health potion, they will often force you to choose between upgrading your powers or restoring your health.
Find Doc Hoggins
The best way to refill your health potion is by visiting Doc Hoggins in Rotwood. It will cost 75 Teffra per visit, and you cannot refill your health potion twice during the same visit. Doc Hoggins will also let you try a “free sample” to restore 250 health points. Interact with the Five-Finger Brew cauldron at his campsite for the freebie.
Doc Hoggins’ location marker is a potion bottle.
Find Alphonse
Alphonse sells armor and weapons, but he also has four nest-like baskets at his campsite that sell corestones, powers, upgrades, and most importantly, potion refills. However, the items in the baskets are always randomized. There is a chance that Alphonse is not selling any potion refills for that specific visit. Compared to Doc Hoggins, though, Alphonse will refill your health potion for only 50 Teffra in Rotwood.
Find Iron Brew
Iron Brew is a rare power in Rotwood that refills and upgrades your health potion at the same time. You get to heal an additional 50% and gain a shield upon every drink. Unfortunately, there is no guaranteed way to get Iron Brew in the game. It appears randomly, just like other powers, so your best bet is to keep choosing the crystal markers to gain new powers after every clearing.
Drink your health potion before picking up Iron Brew, especially if you are about to reach the
Owlitzer boss fight
.
