RTX Buyer Asked To Sign A Resale Loyalty Pledge, Provide ID

RTX Buyer Asked To Sign A Resale Loyalty Pledge, Provide ID

The AI race has bodied the market for high performance computer hardware. As data centers lock in as much gear as possible, it has left the rest of the world paying premiums on tech that was trending towards affordable just a few years ago. How far buyers are willing to be pushed is yet to be fully tested. One enthusiast in California has raised concern over a loyalty pledge they were asked to sign to buy an Nvidia RTX 5090, promising not to flip the hardware and tying the purchase to government ID.

“Picked up a Powerspec Ai90 prebuilt PC with a RTX 5090 in it,” posted Reddit user Krothic. “Apparently the manager required me to fill out this form and scan my driver license. Said it was a new thing starting just about two days ago. Had no problem doing so but thought it was interesting.”

Krothic purchased their RTX at a Micro Center in Tustin, California. According to the post, the store had them sign a declaration in order to make the purchase. The single page form asks that the buyer guarantee the card will be used for personal or business use, and moreover that it won’t be resold or even given away. The pledge puts a hard emphasis on nationality as well, demanding that the card remain in the United States. The form asks to list a home address, government issued ID and the intended use of the hardware.

What the penalties are for breaching the contract is unclear, but having the device tied to one’s ID would make it easy to trace if caught. In the comments, others sound off on similar scrutiny at other stores, the top comment saying they were grilled by a manager to prove their gamer bonafides (with photo evidence). Others believe the document was spurred by resale value for RTX cards internationally and recent policies from Washington banning consumer GPUs from being exported to countries like China.

While Trump’s chosen nomenclature for “Super Intelligence” is still taking shape, it’s clear that his administration is infatuated with the AI space. Against the tide of dissatisfaction, the White House is pushing for data center construction and further development of LLMs. As much as AI has grown in North America, it’s exploded across Asia, with China’s industry among the fastest growing. Whether for information security or more literal warfare, it seems Washington wants to prevent hardware from freeing up to other countries.

It is likely that retailers like Micro Center are reacting to these new pressures, and that other stores may have to exercise their own measures as well. It’s not the first time Trump policy has had strange repercussions in the gaming space, and AI’s warpath in general has drastically inflated prices on PC and console hardware alike.
