Rumor: New Leaked Game From Wasteland Developer is ‘Fallout-Adjacent’

Rumor: New Leaked Game From Wasteland Developer is ‘Fallout-Adjacent’

A new rumor has suggested that the next game from Wasteland developer inXile Entertainment could be adjacent to the Fallout series. While Wasteland is already similar to Fallout in many ways, it seems that Xbox Game Studios may be looking to bridge the gap even further with inXile’s next title.

Developer inXile Entertainment has been the custodian of the Wasteland franchise since 2014, taking over from Interplay, which made the 1988 original. It’s also known for its Bard’s Tale series, and is currently deep into the development of Clockwork Revolution. Over the years, the Wasteland series has drawn plenty of comparisons to the Fallout series, and almost feels like a continuation of the latter’s early CRPG titles. As both are post-apocalyptic role-playing games, comparisons were always going to happen.

Fallout 5 Finally Gets Major Development Update

After years of waiting, Bethesda finally delivers a major development update for Fallout 5.

inXile May Be Working on ‘Fallout-Adjacent’ Game Next

Speaking with Deyton Dykes, Jez Corden revealed he has heard whispers about inXile’s next project being in early stages. “We know inXile’s working on Clockwork Revolution, but they’re already incubating the next project,” Corden explained. “I’ve heard some interesting rumors that could be potentially Fallout-adjacent as well, from inXile. Again, very early days yet, so take that with a huge grain of salt. But it does seem like a lot of studios are trying to lean into the strategy that Asha’s laid out.” This will still depend on the development of Clockwork Revolution, which currently has a 2027 release window but no solid date.

The specifics on what Corden means by “Fallout-adjacent” aren’t exactly clear. He could be talking about a brand-new Fallout game made in inXile’s typical CRPG style, a spin-off harkening back to the series’ early roots. He could also simply mean that inXile’s next post-Clockwork Revolution project is a new Wasteland game, which, while not exactly Fallout, would likely qualify as Fallout-adjacent.

Ultimately, this is interesting for a few reasons – inXile Entertainment was founded in 2002 by Brian Fargo. He co-founded Interplay – the original creator of both Fallout and Wasteland. The potential of a Fallout project for the studio would be a huge full-circle moment, one that would make a lot of sense. Earlier this month, Xbox revealed that big franchises like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls will be a focus going forward, so having a studio like inXile Entertainment under the Xbox Game Studios banner ready to put its CRPG experience to good use in this context almost feels like a no-brainer. Especially when considering Fallout‘s first two games were CRPGs. While it’s not something the series has explored in a long time, the genre’s renewed popularity thanks to the likes of Baldur’s Gate 3 could certainly be interesting.

Although the Wasteland franchise hasn’t had a new release since 2020’s Wasteland 3, fans can expect to see plenty more of Fallout in the coming years. Bethesda recently confirmed that Fallout 3 and New Vegas remasters are officially in development, while Obsidian is also working on a new game in the series. That’s before mentioning Fallout 5, which Bethesda has said is in pre-production. That, combined with whatever inXile is seemingly working on next, means gamers looking for post-apocalyptic RPGs will be well-fed in the near future.
