Rumored Co-Op Multiplayer Assassin’s Creed Game Has Reportedly Been Canceled by Ubisoft

Rumored Co-Op Multiplayer Assassin’s Creed Game Has Reportedly Been Canceled by Ubisoft

A new report claims that the long-rumored Assassin’s Creed multiplayer game that was in development has been scrapped. While there’s still some hope for future Assassin’s Creed multiplayer projects, this news may come as a disappointment to those who were awaiting a modern AC game with a multiplayer component.

Multiplayer was introduced to Assassin’s Creed franchise with Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood back in 2010, and variations of it were offered in following games like Revelations, Black Flag, and Unity. However, the franchise has gone without either a competitive or cooperative multiplayer mode for over a decade, and now hopes that another entry would be along soon have been shut down.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 Director Issues Statement After Wave of Ubisoft Cancellations

Beyond Good & Evil 2 survives Ubisoft’s recent game cancellations, with its creative director expressing both relief and sadness.

Assassin’s Creed League Gets Shut Down

It’s been revealed that an upcoming Assassin’s Creed project that would have seen four assassins joining up in feudal Japan has been canceled. The news came via French site Origami, which claims that it verified the report with half a dozen Ubisoft employees. Called Assassin’s Creed League, the project was initially intended to serve as DLC for the most recent entry, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and would have even produced some of the content arriving in the season pass for the game. Going beyond simple DLC, though, Assassin’s Creed League would have created a new baseline that future Assassin’s Creed games would utilize, re-introducing multiplayer to the franchise’s future entries.

Ultimately, it appears that the developer felt that the project was taking too long, and that attaching it to Assassin’s Creed Shadows wouldn’t make much sense. However, the project wasn’t fully scrapped at that point, with plans to spin it off as a small standalone multiplayer game that likely would have used assets from Assassin’s Creed Shadows. An alpha of the multiplayer game wasn’t expected to be available until May 2026. That has also now been scrapped, with the cancellation apparently coming as a surprise to Ubisoft Annecy leads, who only received the news themselves a week prior to this report.

Not All Is Necessarily Lost for Assassin’s Creed Multiplayer Future

Although this spells the end of the chance of Assassin’s Creed Shadows receiving an official multiplayer mode, there is still a little hope that the future of the series could see multiplayer again someday. A few of the team members who were working on the project have reportedly seen their tasks changed to taking what was accomplished with the AC League project back into Ubisoft’s propietary Anvil game engine. This could open the door for multiplayer to be more easily introduced in future AC games, and at least means that all the work that was put into the project hasn’t been completely lost.

Fans of the Assassin’s Creed franchise still have some hope that the rumored Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, a remake of the original game, is in the works. While not confirmed by Ubisoft, the rumor has been around for quite some time, and Ubisoft teased fans by acknowledging the rumors with a meme response on Twitter.

However, there’s also been a great deal of turbulence at Ubisoft as of late. There have been numerous projects revealed to have been canceled or otherwise shut down by Ubisoft just this year. In just the first month of 2026, it was confirmed that Ubisoft had canceled the Prince of Persia remake, and the Watch Dogs games are apparently dead in the water, despite the franchise’s film adaptation still proceeding. Ubisoft also plans to close several game development studios under its umbrella over the course of the next 3 years. At this point, expectant fans may want to take any rumors with a grain of salt, as even if they’re true, there’s no guarantee that rumored games will actually make it to players, as the game industry as a whole seems to be continuing to see turbulent times following years of layoffs, shutdowns, and restructuring.
