Skills have always been one of the defining parts of RuneScape, giving players a reason to keep returning long after they have finished a quest or defeated a major enemy, and an old, yet new skill is joining the fold in December. Some skills are directly tied to combat, while others turn seemingly mundane activities into their own progression systems. It is a formula that has helped RuneScape support years of character development without making every player follow the same path.
Meanwhile, the skill system has never remained stagnant. RuneScape: Dragonwilds takes that familiar idea and places it inside an open-world survival-crafting game, where skills are tied to much more than simply watching numbers go up. Gathering resources, crafting equipment, building a base, fighting enemies, and exploring Ashenfall all contribute to progression, with the game eventually allowing its skills to reach level 99. Jagex has continued expanding that system through major updates, adding new ways for players to approach survival while keeping the connection to RuneScape‘s traditional skill-based progression.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds Getting An Iconic Skill
Now, one of RuneScape‘s most recognizable combat and support skills is coming to RuneScape: Dragonwilds this December. Prayer will arrive alongside the Luminance update as part of the game’s Winter Update, after Jagex moved the skill from its original launch plans. It will become the game’s 13th overall skill and fourth combat skill, giving players a new progression system built around bones, altars, offerings, rituals, and a new Prayer Points gauge.

Dragonwilds‘ take on RuneScape‘s Prayer will revolve around unlocking powerful passive effects that can benefit both combat and survival. Players will be able to bury bones, build an altar at their base, unlock Prayer slots, and toggle different effects as they progress. Those effects can improve combat capabilities, restore health, make resource gathering more efficient, and provide protection against specific types of damage. Prayer Points can be restored at altars in the world or at a player’s home, although some enemies will be able to drain those points when they land attacks.
The skill will also introduce Blessings that grow stronger as players advance, giving Prayer another role in the latest RuneScape game. RuneScape: Dragonwilds is designed around the idea of skills changing how players interact with Ashenfall, and Prayer will extend that philosophy to both the adventurer and their base. Higher levels will unlock additional buffs, passive upgrades, skill spells, stat improvements, and other bonuses, while the eventual level-99 progression will lead to the craftable Prayer Skillcape.
Prayer’s arrival also shows how RuneScape: Dragonwilds is continuing to expand now that its 1.0 release has concluded the Kuldra Saga. Jagex has already said the game will continue receiving new skills, regions, quests, bosses, and other content beyond that milestone, with Luminance serving as the next major update. For players familiar with Prayer from RuneScape, December will bring a particularly recognizable piece of that progression system into Ashenfall, this time with bones, rituals, and survival mechanics all feeding into the same skill.
