Recently, a Steam page for “Rust 2” appeared, prompting people to understandably believe that Rust 2 was happening. But it is not.
Garry Newman, the head of Rust developer Facepunch, told PC Gamer, “Nope. We’re not making Rust 2.” A Steam page for Rust 2 was published recently, albeit with no images or details on it. As for what that page was all about, Newman said, “No idea at all.”
The staff at SteamDB, a third-party website that monitors the Steam database, said the Rust 2 page has been flagged as “suspicious” and that it could be “malicious or impersonating another product.”
Compounding the weirdness here was that Facepunch COO Alistair McFarlane responded to a Reddit post about the Rust 2 page, saying, “You saw nothing.” This could have no meaning at all, though. Another Facepunch developer said the Rust 2 page on Steam is “fake/not us.”
This wasn’t the first utterance of Rust 2, however, as Newman said in 2023 that, “Rust 2 definitely won’t be a Unity game” in response to the game engine company’s controversial changes.
Facepunch also made headlines recently after McFarlane said Facepunch could pay $25 million to buy New World after Amazon announced it would shut down the MMO for good at the end of January 2027.
A multiplayer survival game, Rust debuted in 2013 for PC and has grown in popularity, eventually getting console versions. The game features survival and crafting elements, and was inspired by DayZ, which itself was a mod for Arma 2.
