Hollow Knight: Silksong fans are once again treating a vague social media post from a Team Cherry rep as a possible sign that Sea of Sorrow news may be nearing. The reaction comes after months of silence on Silksong‘s upcoming expansion, which Team Cherry first and last discussed when it announced it in December 2025.
Following in the footsteps of the Hollow Knight 1 DLC, Sea of Sorrow has been envisioned as an entirely free addition to Silksong. It is poised to introduce nautically themed content, including new areas, mobs, bosses, tools, and more. Team Cherry revealed Sea of Sorrow with a 2026 release window which it has yet to narrow down any further.

Beating all the bosses in Hollow Knight: Silksong is a daunting challenge, but one player is making the task even more difficult.
Newest Team Cherry Member Stokes Sea of Sorrow Speculation
That open-ended timeline is part of what made a brief social media exchange stand out to Hollow Knight: Silksong fans this week. After months without any fresh Sea of Sorrow specifics, some players have once again started speculating when Silksong‘s first content expansion may see the light of day. In an unexpected turn of events, Team Cherry representative Matthew Griffin chimed in on one such theory, offering a single “🧐” emoji in response to one fan joking about having “reliable sources” claiming that more Sea of Sorrow news is at last due to be announced in May 2026.
On its own, that response does not amount to much. Griffin did not mention Sea of Sorrow by name, did not reference a date, and did not provide anything that could reasonably be treated as a formal tease. Even so, because he handles much of Team Cherry’s outward-facing communication, some fans were quick to treat the reply as potentially meaningful after months without any substantive expansion news. It did not take long for that reaction to (d)evolve into a textbook example of the “Silksanity” phenomenon that has been plaguing some Hollow Knight fans for many a year now.
Parts of the online community are thus currently fully focused on spamming “silkposts” that read far more into Griffin’s monocle emoji than the post itself clearly supported. As is tradition, the r/Silksong subreddit and its 355,000 subscribers are the driving force behind this outpouring of jokes, images, and pleas. The reaction has a thin but real piece of roadmap context behind it. When Team Cherry released the Silksong Patch 5 update on March 16, 2026, the studio described it as the game’s last significant patch before Sea of Sorrow. That has conditioned fans to read near-term Team Cherry communication as potentially loaded, particularly given the studio’s history of prolonged silences.
Team Cherry has not narrowed Sea of Sorrow‘s 2026 release window since unveiling the ambitious expansion in mid-December 2025. For the time being, then, Griffin’s emoji is better understood as fuel for speculation than as evidence of anything concrete. As for when this radio silence may end, another Xbox showcase is rumored to be happening soon, and Summer Game Fest 2026 is fast approaching as well.
