Skate Devs Respond To Offline Mod, Would Prefer You Didn’t

Skate Devs Respond To Offline Mod, Would Prefer You Didn’t

One week ago, Skate fans unleashed ReSkate, a modding platform that enables community run servers, custom maps and a circus of character skins. However, its most popular feature is far and away the ability to take the free-to-play game offline and still grind through Steam’s ecosystem. The swift popularity of the mods have forced developers Full Circle to respond, who really wish you wouldn’t.

“Skateboarding in general is built on community and creative expression, and we support that,” reads Full Circle’s statement. “To be completely clear, we are not against creativity from players or stopping that from happening. Where we have to draw the line is when mods or other tools bypass our systems to unlock paid cosmetics, release gated/unreleased content, or profit from these unauthorized assets. That rips off artists, skate brands, and creators, as well as our own development team here at Full Circle, who work hard to bring skate culture into our game.”

For over a decade, fans had wished for a new entry in EA’s Skate series so regularly that it became a bit of a shtick. When the wish came true, it felt like it was accidentally spent on a monkey’s paw. Diverting from previous entries, 2025’s Skate (or skate.) is a free-to-play sandbox, requiring skaters to remain in its always-online ecosystem, forgoing any single player campaign and risking the ever-present threat of sudden extinction. While still in early access, the freemium model has certainly thrown some sand on its wheels, with poor player retention causing the studio to restructure in February.

Now the monkey’s paw curls for Full Circle. Interest in Skate has rekindled, but entirely around an unofficial platform that threatens to undercut its monetization model. As ‘vibe coded,’ AI-driven decompiles accelerate gaming side-shows, the likewise AI-made, open source ReSkate is giving many players the features they’ve long desired, especially the ability to play on their own terms. Picking up over 350 thousand downloads, and playable through Steam’s Proton emulation, Full Circle says they will be adding official, secure access tools “that enable broader, deeper community creation.” And while they haven’t stated intentions to shut down ReSkate or circumvent its access, they’re pleading with players to stay within the game’s official ecosystem.

ReSkate’s developers told PC Gamer that they weren’t looking to undercut Full Circle’s operations. “For me the game is free to play and they need to make money somehow to be able to keep developing the game,” says co-creator zee_x64. “We were just doing it for the love of the game.” The ReSkate team also says that if EA’s legal team does knock on their door that they don’t intend to fight back.
