Sony Finally Issues Official Statement on Ending PlayStation Disc Production

Sony has officially responded to the backlash over its decision to end PlayStation disc production, confirming it still intends to move forward with the plan. PlayStation fans have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with the matter, even launching boycotts since the news first broke.

On July 1, 2026, Sony announced that physical production for all new games released on PlayStation consoles will end in January 2028. In this new era, all games will be sold digitally through the PlayStation Store or participating retailers. The news did not land well with many fans, as concerns involving ownership, resale markets, game preservation, and Sony’s control over digital pricing quickly became the biggest topics of conversation in online circles. Following significant fan backlash against PlayStation on social media, Sony CFO Lin Tao has now spoken out.

Official PlayStation Disc Petition is Blowing Up

Gamers upset about Sony’s decision to cease production of physical PlayStation discs start a petition that is quickly gaining steam.

During Sony’s FY2026 earnings call on July 31, Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao responded to a question about PlayStation’s digital-only future, explaining that the company considered several factors before deciding to abandon physical game production. She said that the continued digitalization of entertainment content was the biggest influence on the company’s decision to go digital in 2028, arguing that this shift is not unique to PlayStation and is evident across numerous forms of media. Sony reportedly spent a considerable amount of time thinking about the future of the PlayStation platform before reaching its decision, concluding that the company will “cautiously move this forward.” Although “cautiously” could suggest that Sony is reconsidering the change, it is more likely to indicate that the company intends to manage the transition carefully. At this time, Sony appears firm in its stance to move away from physical disc production.

However, Tao does have some understanding of what fans have been trying to express to the company over the past month. The executive directly acknowledged the range of opinions Sony has received regarding the matter, recognizing the “strong views” fans may have. She noted how physical games can carry fond memories and said the company understands why physical collections hold emotional value. Tao claims Sony will continue exploring how to engage with players on that level within what she called a “future digital ecosystem,” expressing some sympathy toward collectors and physical media enthusiasts, but not directly addressing some of the biggest concerns fans have at this time.

Much to the disappointment of many fans who want to see PlayStation continue releasing physical games, the company’s financial results do support Sony’s digital strategy. This year, Sony reported that 82% of PS4 and PS5 full-game unit sales were digital downloads during the quarter ending June 30, 2026. Physical software revenue totaled roughly $128 million during the quarter, compared with $1.2 billion in digital software revenue and $1.83 billion in add-on content revenue. Additionally, PlayStation network services, including PS Plus subscriptions and advertising, generated an additional $1.3 billion. With digital figures that far outweigh physical numbers like that, Sony’s financial motivation for a digital-only future is clear.

With Sony not backing away from the January 2028 deadline, questions still remain unanswered about where this leaves the industry going forward. The company still has not explained how it will allow players to exchange or gift games if they wish, protect access to titles if they are ever removed from the PlayStation Store, or appeal to physical media enthusiasts. Sony may understand why PlayStation discs matter to its community, but its first official response makes clear that emotional attachment alone will not stop the company’s digital transition.
