Killzone has been dormant for 13 years, but there are now rumblings that Sony is ready to bring its sci-fi first-person shooter franchise back with a new project. Killzone used to be one of the central pillars of PlayStation’s first-party lineup before it pivoted more of its efforts to open-world games.
According to MP1st, home of the franchise, Guerrilla Games, will work with an external studio to bring Killzone back to life. The project, reportedly still very early in development, would potentially be a remaster or remake of one of the existing games, with 2004’s original Killzone seeming the most likely candidate. Though the new report also claims it’s possible the project could morph into a more substantial reboot.
PlayStation did sign a co-development agreement with Outriders maker People Can Fly back in March 2025. That project is codenamed Delta, and according to MP1st, it is based on an existing PlayStation IP. That studio would certainly make a lot of sense as a possibility for reviving Killzone, though that potential link remains pure conjecture.
Guerrilla Games is currently focused on Horizon Hunter’s Gathering, a live-service spin-off of Horizon that has reportedly been rebooted after flunking a recent playtest. As Kotaku previously reported, a true sequel to Horizon Forbidden West remains many years away as the bulk of the studio works on the upcoming multiplayer game. It’s unclear where Guerrilla collaborating with an outside studio on a Killzone remaster or reboot would fit into that pipeline.
PlayStation fans haven’t received a new entry in the shooter series since 2013’s Killzone: Shadow Fall, a launch game for the PS4. The first three mainline games in the series received an anthology on PS3, but remain inaccessible on PS5. Even Killzone 1, a PS2 game, hasn’t received the classic treatment as part of PS Plus.
