Sony has released a brand-new update for its PlayStation 4 console that users can download right now. The PlayStation 4 was first released in 2013 and was a massive success for Sony right out of the gate. While the PS3 had a slow start sales-wise, the PS4 had no problem dominating its competition, demolishing the Wii U and Xbox One to become one of the best-selling video game consoles of all time. Considering how big of a hit the PS4 has proven to be, it’s no surprise that Sony has continued supporting it years after the PS5 was first released.
The early years of the PS5’s lifespan included many high-profile PS4 cross-gen releases, like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and God of War Ragnarok, just to name a couple. Sony has continued to support the PS4 in other ways as well, releasing free PS Plus games to PS4 gamers on a monthly basis, despite it saying that it would be winding down that perk last January. The latest PS4 development has seen Sony release a surprise new console update for the platform.
PS4 gamers can download the latest system software update right now, bringing the console to Version 14.00. Unfortunately for those that like more specific patch notes, Sony didn’t provide many details about what the new PS4 console update does beyond that it improves “system software performance and stability.” Some PS4 gamers may be disappointed that the update doesn’t add any substantial new features, but now that we’re six years into the PS5’s lifespan, it’s unlikely that many were expecting such an update for the 13-year-old console anyway.
Sony tends to support its older consoles with system software updates on occasion, for whatever reason that may be. For example, the PS3 still gets console updates every once in a while, and it predates the PS4 by a whopping eight years. Assuming Sony decides to support the PS4 in a similar manner as it has the PS3, it’s likely that fans can expect the console to continue receiving new updates for years to come, even if they are very few and far between.
Chances are the vast majority of future PS4 console updates will be similar to the latest one, focused on improving performance and stability and not doing much else. More substantial console updates will be reserved for the PS5, as that is Sony’s current console and what it’s releasing its games for. What future PS5 console updates have in store remains to be seen, but many fans are still holding out hope that the console gets proper themes like the PS4 offers.
It was seven years between the debut of the PS4 and the launch of the PS5, and so it seems like we are getting close to the reveal and release of the PlayStation 6. The latest leaks and rumors point to the PS6 aiming for a 2028 release window, but that has yet to be officially announced by Sony. Fans can download the latest PS4 console update in the meantime and continue enjoying their current PlayStation consoles while they wait to see what’s next.
