Sony Reportedly Not Budging on All-Digital PlayStation Future Despite Pressure

Sony Reportedly Not Budging on All-Digital PlayStation Future Despite Pressure

Sony is reportedly showing no signs of being willing to reconsider the decision to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games beginning in 2028. The claim comes amid mounting opposition to the PlayStation maker’s digital-only strategy and recent rumors that it was considering delaying the transition.

The rumors in question largely trace back to an August 28 Eurogamer Spain podcast, which relayed some purported industry chatter from the 2026 Gamescom show floor. The most notable claim was that Sony was considering delaying its planned 2028 cutoff for physical game releases by one or two years. The reported rethink was attributed to pressure from publishers, as well as a belief that Microsoft planned to reverse its rumored decision to abandon physical media with the next-generation Xbox console in an effort to capitalize on the opening left by PlayStation. None of those claims were independently verified and, according to game publishing veteran Richard Browne, none are rooted in reality.

The Witcher 4 Confirmed for Physical Release

The Witcher 4 is officially confirmed to be getting a boxed physical release, though this promise comes with one pretty substantial catch.

Sony Reportedly Still Plans to End New PlayStation Disc Manufacturing in 2028

In an August 30 X post, Browne said there was “NO talk of Sony changing strategy at GamesCom,” adding that publishers are still following the company’s guidance for new PlayStation game distribution going fully discless in 2028. He also claimed Microsoft would do the same if it launches another console, directly contradicting the suggestion that the next-generation Xbox could pressure Sony into reconsidering its existing plans. Browne further questioned the provenance of the reversal rumors, heavily implying they were never nothing more than wishful thinking.

Browne’s account is consistent with Sony’s publicly stated position, first communicated on July 1, when the gaming giant announced that physical disc production for all new PS4 and PS5 titles would end on January 1, 2028. Existing PlayStation titles released in 2027 or earlier will be unaffected by the change, with Sony still planning to fulfill new production orders for those games for the foreseeable future. Sony remained firm in this decision in the weeks that followed, telling investors in late July that it does not expect the transition to negatively affect its business while acknowledging player feedback surrounding the decision.

Digital Ownership Concerns Are Fueling the Backlash Against an All-Digital PlayStation Future

The feedback in question has been substantial, even overwhelming. Opposition to the policy has included petitions, social media campaigns, and a week-long PlayStation blackout organized in August 2026. The backlash has also brought concerns about digital ownership to the forefront. Those concerns intensified after PlayStation users were reminded that digital purchases amount to revocable licenses rather than conventional ownership, which is something Sony itself has consistently argued, highlighting one of the main reasons many vocal consumers remain resistant to an entirely digital distribution model.

PlayStation 6 May Still Support a Disc Drive

But Only as an Optional Add-On, Similar to PS5 Pro

While Sony is clearly signaling that it is ready to begin phasing out physical game production, that ambition does not necessarily rule out disc support for the PlayStation 6. From a backward-compatibility standpoint, the company’s next-generation console, whenever it arrives, could still offer an optional disc drive capable of playing physical PS4 and PS5 games, mirroring the PS5 Pro approach to physical game support.
