While Gamescom Opening Night Live’s trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation didn’t contain the juiciest morsels, the event also hosted a deep dive into the game where fans got even more details—including why one official Square Enix dev is “worried” about Vincent Valentine. Indeed, if there was one disappointment with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, it’s that Vincent Valentine was not as prominent as his most diehard fans want him to always be.
That does not apply to Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. Vincent Valentine is going to play a much bigger role this time around, being more available from the outset, and that means time spent playing as him. Many fans no doubt have memories of playing him in the original and his Final Fantasy 7 game, Dirge of Cerberus, and while this is different, it’s apparently really good—concerningly good.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Deep Dive Looks at Vincent Valentine’s Combat
Gamescom recently hosted a deep dive into Final Fantasy 7 Revelation‘s combat (alongside the recently released and well-reviewed Star Wars: Zero Company as well). In it, game director Naoki Hamaguchi explained how players can freely switch between Valentine’s two dominant combat modes. The first is his long-range gunslinging style, but as fans know, that’s not all he’s capable of. Thanks to experiments by Hojo, Valentine can also transform into the Galian Beast thanks to Jenova cells and Chaos-infused Mako Energy, and players can change into that seamlessly for close-range combat in his beast form as well. All of this has Hamaguchi “worried.”

It’s in the best way, at least, with Hamaguchi explaining that he is “worried” a lot of people will exclusively play as Valentine during Final Fantasy 7 Revelation‘s gameplay and not the rest of the party. Worrying that Valentine is too good is a pretty appropriate reaction to who Valentine is supposed to be, so while that’s not true, it means his fans should be eating good in the new Square Enix game. That said, it does feel like a slight exaggeration, as Square Enix is bringing a lot of new content into its combat.

For example, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is introducing the FITS system—a new twist on the classic jobs system that changes up the core combat of every character. Hamaguchi has previously explained that every character has 4 fits, which also changes their physical appearance, and it’s all inspired by classic Final Fantasy jobs like Black Mage, Warrior, and Summoner. One example of this new system is Tifa’s ability to become a Black Mage and Cloud’s ability to be a Warrior.
It remains to be seen which FIT is most popular, who players enjoy controlling most as they head into the final battle of Sephiroth, but Vincent Valentine (even if his gameplay was boring) was going to be near the top of the list. Vincent Valentine has always been a popular Final Fantasy character, so there’s no reason to believe that will change in the upcoming release of FF7 Revelation.
