Even after a decade of updates, Stardew Valley still has plenty of surprises left for players. Its upcoming 1.7 update has already generated considerable excitement, particularly following the confirmation that Clint and Sandy will become marriage candidates. However, creator Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone has kept most of the expansion’s contents under wraps, offering only a handful of cryptic clues about what players should expect.
During an appearance at the Symphony of Seasons concert at Red Rocks Amphitheater on October 25, ConcernedApe reportedly revealed that Stardew Valley 1.7 would be the game’s biggest update yet, with a tentative release window of 2027. According to attendees, he also described Clint and Sandy as merely the “tip of the iceberg.” That comment is particularly exciting in light of a mysterious message he shared in September, which has yet to receive any explanation. If the new marriage candidates represent such a small part of the update, the message’s more ambitious interpretations suddenly seem worth another look.
Stardew Valley 1.7’s Two Paths Could Mean More Than New Romances
In September 2026, ConcernedApe shared a cryptic message on the official Stardew Valley Discord server containing three clues about Update 1.7. The first stated that “two paths will be extended,” which immediately prompted speculation about the game’s existing progression systems. One straightforward interpretation involves Clint and Sandy, whose previously limited relationship paths will be expanded to accommodate romance and marriage. Considering both characters have been part of the game for years, this seems like a reasonable explanation. However, the developer’s latest comments make me wonder whether the clue could be pointing toward something considerably more substantial.
Guess the games from the emojis.
Another interpretation involves the Community Center and JojaMart routes, which determine how players approach one of Stardew Valley‘s central storylines. Although both paths eventually allow players to develop Pelican Town, their long-term consequences are relatively limited once the major objectives are completed. Extending these routes could introduce additional objectives or more meaningful differences between their outcomes. Personally, I find this possibility more exciting than the romance explanation, particularly because it would give experienced players another reason to revisit one of the game’s earliest decisions. Nothing confirms that the clue refers to these routes, but the reported scale of Update 1.7 makes the idea easier to imagine.
Three Becoming Four Could Be Stardew Valley 1.7’s Biggest Surprise
The second clue, “three will become four,” is considerably harder to interpret. One theory involves the three established children living in and around Pelican Town: Vincent, Jas, and Leo. Introducing a fourth child could expand the community’s younger generation, particularly since ConcernedApe previously expressed interest in making the game’s children more interesting. Another possibility involves the farmer’s own children, who currently stop developing after reaching the toddler stage. However, because the existing system already contains four growth stages, the clue doesn’t neatly fit a straightforward extension of that mechanic. There is still plenty of room for speculation about what the number represents.
Extending these routes could introduce additional objectives or more meaningful differences between their outcomes.
A more ambitious interpretation involves the game’s explorable world. Stardew Valley has expanded considerably since launch, with the Calico Desert and Ginger Island offering substantial content beyond Pelican Town. Some players have suggested that the clue refers to these three major destinations becoming four, potentially indicating another significant location. Ginger Island was one of Update 1.5’s defining additions, giving players an entirely new area to explore alongside substantial late-game progression. If 1.7 really surpasses every previous expansion in scope, another region would certainly help explain that promise.
The Mermaid’s Fruit Remains Stardew Valley 1.7’s Strangest Clue
The final line, “the mermaid’s fruit will go free,” is perhaps the most intriguing because its meaning is so difficult to pin down. Stardew Valley already contains several mermaid-related elements, including the Mermaid’s Pendant used to propose marriage and the mysterious performance at the Night Market. The latter rewards players with a Pearl for solving its musical puzzle, although that particular reward can only be collected once per save file. One interpretation is that the clue refers to a change involving Pearls or the Night Market itself. However, the wording is unusual enough that it could have an entirely different meaning.
A particularly interesting theory connects the clue to parenthood. Since the Mermaid’s Pendant is required for marriage, the “fruit” could metaphorically refer to children born from that relationship. The suggestion that they will “go free” might therefore hint at children gaining greater independence, potentially allowing them to leave the farmhouse or participate in everyday activities around Pelican Town. This interpretation lines up with ConcernedApe’s previously stated interest in improving children, although he hasn’t explained what those improvements will involve. I find this one of the more convincing theories because it connects the unusual wording to an existing mechanic that the developer has already identified as needing attention.
Stardew Valley 1.7’s Latest Tease Makes Its Secrets More Exciting
The most exciting part of ConcernedApe’s latest remarks is that none of these theories needs to be correct for Update 1.7 to deliver something substantial. He previously explained that his goal was to deepen underdeveloped areas of Stardew Valley without making the game unnecessarily complicated. He has also discussed introducing features that players haven’t specifically requested, suggesting that some of the expansion’s biggest surprises could be difficult to predict from existing mechanics. If Clint and Sandy really are only the beginning, the September riddle could be hinting at changes that players haven’t even considered yet. For a game that has already received enormous expansions like 1.5 and 1.6, the promise of something bigger is exciting enough on its own.
Perhaps the most interesting possibility is that the clues don’t share any obvious connection at all. ConcernedApe could be teasing changes to completely different parts of the game, each substantial enough to deserve its own reveal. With the developer reportedly aiming for a 2027 release, there is still time for more information to emerge. Until then, his latest comments have made an already mysterious update considerably more intriguing, especially when even its confirmed marriage candidates might represent only a fraction of what is coming.
