Stardew Valley Mod Makes You Buy 1 Tile at a Time

A new mod for Stardew Valley amps up the game’s challenge to a whole new level, requiring players to purchase every bit of progression they get. The beloved farming simulation game offers players no shortage of things to do within its world, offering up a fully realized rural village with lots of gameplay mechanics, companions, and more to discover. Stardew Valley‘s solo developer, ConcernedApe, has continued to roll out new updates to the game for nearly ten years since the game’s original debut in 2016. However, some fans have looked to push the boundaries of the game even further.

Alongside Stardew Valley‘s explosion in popularity throughout the late 2010s and into the 2020s came a rich and vibrant modding scene for the game. Members of the game’s community have pushed everything from crossovers with other popular games like Baldur’s Gate 3 to full-blown new gameplay mechanics and RPG-style progression for Stardew Valley. One ambitious Stardew Valley mod has even set its goal to implement voices for the indie game, intending to add voice acting for each romanceable character in Stardew Valley. Now, one ambitious Stardew Valley mod brings an unusual level of challenge to the farming sim game.

Stardew Valley Update 1.7’s Ideal Release Date Seems Obvious

Stardew Valley creator Eric Barone has confirmed a 1.7 update, and while it’s still secretive, the ideal release date is clear.

Stardew Valley Mod Makes Players Purchase Every Tile

Reddit user Big_Z_69 shared a new mod they have created for Stardew Valley, adding a major monetary blockade to progression within the game. The mod, referred to in an associated video as “Tile-Locked Valley,” requires the player to purchase every single exploreable tile within Stardew Valley, charging in-game money to unlock more playable space. The cost of purchasing tiles also slowly increases as the player acquires more, starting at a cost of 10 gold for the first ten tiles and increasing to as high as 10,000 gold per tile. The Reddit user does confirm that the mod is currently not available for other Stardew Valley fans to download, still needing to “put some finishing touches” on the mod.

The ambitious Stardew Valley mod saw plenty of amused reactions within the Reddit post. Many joked about the nature of having to buy all of Stardew Valley‘s playable space, likening it to companies like EA or the in-universe Joja Corporation. One user commented on the similarity of the Stardew Valley mod to an Old-School RuneScape challenge created by YouTuber Settled, which the mod creator cited as a major inspiration. A tentative release window was also revealed by the mod creator within the post’s replies, suggesting that the Stardew Valley mod will be made available before they complete the YouTube series.

Stardew Valley Boasts a Wide Array of Expansive Mods

Stardew Valley‘s array of mods has brought a wide mix of different content to the farming sim, with some significantly expanding the game’s scope. The popular Sunberry Village mod for Stardew Valley adds an entirely new village for players to explore outside Pelican Town, with several new NPCs, events, and crops introduced to the game. The previously-mentioned Baldur’s Gate 3-themed mod for Stardew Valley also adds several new characters, even debuting a romance route with fan-favorite character Astarion.

While Stardew Valley has fostered a rich and active modding community, developer ConcernedApe is far from finished with the farming sim. The developer has already confirmed that Stardew Valley will be receiving a Version 1.7 update, despite previous statements that he would be shifting his focus to the in-development Haunted Chocolatier. ConcernedApe has also stated he has no intentions of stopping new updates for Stardew Valley, even claiming he could potentially add new content to the game “50 years” down the line. ConcernedApe’s passion for Stardew Valley has clearly rubbed off on fans of the game, as impressive new mods continue to push the limits of the smash-hit farming sim.
