Stardew Valley’s 1.7 Update Finally Gives Its Most Pointless Character a Purpose

Stardew Valley’s 1.7 Update Finally Gives Its Most Pointless Character a Purpose

Every character should have their place inside their world, narrative, or ecosystem. Whether it be in a well-balanced party or in the rhythms of small-town life, even the side characters are usually meant to serve some thematic or mechanical function. In cozy sims specifically, towns thrive on the idea that everyone matters; each resident contributes something meaningful to the atmosphere. With romance mechanics, certain characters can even affect the player’s story. But that hasn’t always been entirely true in Stardew Valley.

Now, that is changing. Developer ConcernedApe has revealed that the upcoming 1.7 update will introduce two marriage candidates: Clint and Sandy. Clint’s inclusion has long felt like a matter of “when” rather than “if,” especially given his role in Pelican Town. Yet Sandy was a character who lived on the margins of most players’ experiences. So, with 1.7, Stardew Valley may finally be giving its most out-of-the-way character something she’s never truly had before: relevance.

A ConcernedApe Interview from Last Year Could Potentially Hint at What to Expect from New Stardew Valley Romance Candidates Coming in Update 1.7

Stardew Valley’s next romanceable NPCs may have already been revealed by Eric Barone, hinting at potential new marriage candidates.

Stardew Valley’s Sandy will Finally Get Her Moment in the Sun

Pelican Town is filled with memorable personalities. Most bachelors and bachelorettes have a subset of the fandom who will ride and die for them. However, other characters have historically existed more as set dressing than as fully realized members of the community. Some lack deep story arcs that are only fueled by fan theories, and others are just uninteresting to certain players. Then, there’s Sandy. Sandy is a character who is geographically and narratively isolated. This results in players barely interacting with her, except for the occasional visit to the Calico Desert Oasis shop. For most players, Sandy was out of sight. Therefore, out of mind.

Sandy Is Not Even On Some Players’ Radars

Something shocked me while I was scrolling through social media after ConcernedApe’s 10th-anniversary stream. Of course, most of the discourse surrounded the marriage candidates: forums and threads flooded my FYP with celebration, annoyance, and every reaction you could expect. Yet, the one thing that shocked me was confusion. Over and over again, I saw some Stardew fans ask, “Who is Sandy?”

Some players will never meet Sandy. Not only is she out of sight, but she is behind an unlockable area of the map, which is not the most accessible. Depending on a player’s priorities, it may take several seasons or well over a year before they can meet Sandy. As of Stardew‘s 1.6 Update, there are two ways to reach Sandy.

  • Completing the Vault Bundle: The vault bundle is not immediately available. It only becomes accessible after completing four Community Center bundles. Completing all Vault bundles costs a whopping 42,500g, but it will give gamers access to Calico Desert.
  • Joja Community Development Form: The Community Development form becomes available after paying for a JojaMart Membership. This means that the Community Center will be turned into a warehouse. The “Bus” project is available for 40,000g,

Reaching Sandy is already an uphill battle for players balancing taking care of a farm, getting familiar with Stardew‘s many mechanics, and just getting familiar with the villagers of Pelican Town. On top of that, Sandy’s job at Oasis isn’t too critical to the natural rhythms of the game. She also never leaves her post, except on her birthday, when she hangs out with Emily. So, the fact that Sandy has been placed on the map is a great service to one of Stardew‘s best NPCs.

Stardew Valley Achieves Incredible New Milestone

Almost 10 years after its original release, the beloved farming-sim Stardew Valley achieves an incredible history-making milestone.

Sandy joining the Stardew Valley bachelorettes feels natural. Mostly because she reads like a blend of some of the game’s most beloved romance options. For a character who once felt like a distant novelty, Sandy stepping into the marriage pool suddenly makes her feel like she’s been hiding in plain sight.

  • Sandy is like Emily in that they both adore fashion. They also share warmth toward the farmer.
  • She has a hint of Haley‘s glamor, but without Haley’s early-game abrasiveness.
  • She carries the quiet independence that players admire in Leah.
  • Like Penny, Sandy gives off the energy of someone ready for a fresh start.

That combination makes her feel less like an oddball addition and more like the missing piece finally snapping into place. Marriage will also change Sandy’s accessibility entirely, joining the natural rhythm of other marriage candidates. It will bring her onto the farm, reframing her as a potential part of a player’s everyday life. It will turn a distant shopkeeper into a partner who can participate in routines, Stardew Valley festivals, and quiet domestic moments.

Things that Sandy Loves in Stardew Valley

Pelican Town Needs Sandy

There’s also something genuinely sweet about what this means for Sandy. The game has long given us context about their friendship, but distance keeps it abstract. Letting Sandy become a fully fledged marriage candidate in Stardew Valley creates the possibility of proper homecoming, where she’s no longer stuck on the edge of a map. Instead, she will be integrated into the community where her closest connections already live.

What awaits Sandy is a proper narrative promotion. Sandy moving from the Calico Desert to the heart of farmers finally lets her step out of anonymity and irrelevance into the spotlight. Not as a curiosity, but as someone who belongs.
