Starfield Hotfix for PS5 Issues Coming This Week

Starfield developer Bestheda Game Studios has responded to the ongoing PS5 crash issues with the open-world sci-fi game and narrowed down when PS5 owners can expect these issues to be fixed. Starfield coming to PS5 wasn’t a big surprise, given Microsoft’s recent pivot into more of a third-party publisher, but many fans were surprised by the state of the game.

As fans know, Starfield was initially positioned as an Xbox/PC exclusive after Microsoft acquired Bethesda, or at the very least, that seemed to be Microsoft’s strategy as it tried to strengthen Xbox’s lineup of games. Microsoft pivoted away from strict exclusivity over time, however, toward a broader multiplatform approach and prioritized reaching more players and increasing revenue instead. By 2026, that strategy shift led to Starfield coming to PS5 after roughly three years of Xbox exclusivity, reflecting a wider trend of former Xbox exclusives expanding to other platforms.

The Fix for Starfield’s PS5 Issues is on the Way

The Starfield Hotfix for PS5 crashes releases this week

Since Starfield launched on PS5, players have been reporting frequent and unpredictable crashes that occur during normal gameplay, including exploration, city traversal, and space travel. These PS5 crashes on Starfield often freeze the game completely, forcing a full restart and occasionally causing lost progress or mission failures. Some users also report broader instability issues like performance drops, inconsistent behavior across graphics settings, and difficulty finding reliable fixes, with no clear cause identified. Obviously, PS5 players are frustrated with the current state of the game and have criticized the port’s technical state, given that it launched on PC and Xbox back in 2023.

At the very least, these issues have an expiration date, according to developer Bethesda. In response to the complaints, Bethesda reveals it has been hard at work identifying the PS5 crashing issues and has “narrowed them down to a small number of causes.” Whatever those may be exactly, Bethesda went on to say that it is addressing all of these issues in a hotfix coming sometime this week. In other words, anyone who is struggling with Starfield may just want to sit back and wait for these fixes to be issued.

Looking ahead, Bethesda’s promise of a near-term hotfix offers some reassurance, but players should remain cautious given how complex open-world game fixes can be. Even if the immediate crashing problems are resolved, many expect additional patches to be needed to fully stabilize performance and address lingering inconsistencies. For now, PS5 players are left in a holding pattern—waiting to see whether the upcoming update meaningfully improves the experience or if further technical work will be required over time. At the very least, the worst of the issues should be resolved this week.

It’s worth noting that Starfield‘s Free Lanes update, its biggest update in over a year, and the Terran Armada DLC also arrived alongside the PS5 port. This new update brings with it a ton of new content, including but not limited to, an improved gear system, the Moon Jumper vehicle, the Chateau Des Etoiles and the Milliwhale pet, the introduction of Action Figures (similar to Fallout‘s Bobbleheads), and the Cruise Control feature. Once the PS5 crashing is fixed, there’s plenty of content (new and old) to enjoy in Starfield at the very least.
