Steam Leak Reveals Canceled Horror Game Dedicated to Popular Franchise

A massive Steam leak has uncovered a previously unknown multiplayer horror game based on the Scream franchise, complete with a playable build featuring Ghostface. The enormous Steam archive contains years of old development files and unreleased material that users have continued examining since it surfaced online.

The wider leak reportedly contains roughly 12TB of Steam files dating from 2003 through 2013, including prototypes, beta builds, and other development material. Much of the initial attention naturally focused on the possibility of discovering unfinished Valve projects, but the archive also contains material from third-party developers that apparently passed through Steam’s development infrastructure. That has turned the leak into a much broader look at gaming history, with one of its more surprising discoveries being an online Scream project that seemingly disappeared before the public ever knew it existed.

Horror Games That Use Players’ Microphones

Using the player’s microphone in gameplay is an excellent way to increase immersion and tension in horror games. Here’s which titles did it the best.

Canceled Scream Game Was Apparently Years Ahead of Its Time

Twitter user Roly Poly Reaper discovered several unfinished builds of a previously unannounced Scream game, with datamined information pointing to Fatshark as the developer, the studio best known for Warhammer: Vermintide and Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. The builds appear to date to around 2011, and Roly Poly Reaper managed to restore multiplayer functionality using Goldberg Emulator and Radmin VPN. Footage shows a group of survivors attempting to escape while another player controls Ghostface. However, folders named “Scream_Pitch” and “Screampitch_inside” suggest the project may have been a pitch prototype rather than a fully greenlit game that was later canceled.

What makes the discovery especially interesting is how familiar the multiplayer setup looks today. The prototype places several survivors against a player-controlled killer, resembling the asymmetrical horror format later popularized by games such as Dead by Daylight and Friday the 13th: The Game. The apparent 2011 development date puts Fatshark’s experiment roughly five years before Dead by Daylight launched and six years before Friday the 13th. That doesn’t mean Fatshark invented asymmetrical horror, as games such as Left 4 Dead had already experimented with players taking opposing roles, but it makes the Scream prototype an unusually early example of the one-killer-versus-survivors formula that later became closely associated with licensed horror games.

That timing has also shaped much of the player reaction. Some Reddit users have wondered how the concept might have evolved if Fatshark had pushed further into the identity and deception inherent to Scream, while others have argued that the footage looks fairly generic by modern standards. Several commenters countered that criticism by pointing out how early the prototype was compared with the games it now resembles. The larger curiosity is what a licensed Scream multiplayer game might have looked like if the project had progressed beyond this early stage.

The discovery ultimately highlights why the enormous Steam archive is becoming interesting beyond unfinished versions of games players already know. This Scream prototype seems to have survived in a state complete enough for fans to restore multiplayer more than 15 years later, offering a rare chance to experience an idea that might otherwise have disappeared entirely. There is no way to know whether Fatshark’s pitch would have succeeded commercially or even secured a full license, but its existence offers a fascinating glimpse at how differently multiplayer horror games could have developed. As players continue searching through the leak, its most valuable discoveries may be projects like Scream that reveal pieces of gaming history nobody realized were missing.
