Steam Officially Makes Open-World Game 100% Free, Plus an Additional Freebie

Steam is the home of many games, and it is also the source of many cheap deals on Steam games, free promotions, and other methods of getting PC gamers cheap or free games. Its constant sales are proof of that.

Of course, two of its biggest offerings are the Steam Free-to-Keep Promotion and the Free-to-Play Events. Fans usually get a couple of games on each every week, although it obviously varies.

New Steam Free-to-Keep Promotion Game Hits New All-Time Peak Player Count (Claim Before It’s Gone)

The latest giveaway from Steam’s Free-to-Keep Promotion is being claimed by tons of players, and it’s still available for a limited time.

The latest addition to Steam’s Free-to-Keep Promotion is Breathedge, an open-world survival-crafting game, while it is also hosting a Free-to-Play event for NBA 2K26 (which Xbox users can play too). Steam users have until August 9 at 12 pm CT to claim Breathedge and keep it forever, while they can also play NBA 2K26 to their heart’s content until August 14. Links and additional info included for each game below.

Claim Steam Free-to-Keep Game Breathedge for Free and Keep It Forever

breathedge press 1

The new, previously unannounced addition to the Steam Free-to-Keep Promotion is Breathedge, a unique open-world survival-crafting game on Steam. In it, players find themselves stranded after a massive cosmic disaster as Man, an ordinary guy. Players must scavenge resources, craft tools, and survive deep space as expected of the genre, but there’s some unique comedy, unique features à la science and space, and cool exploration features surrounding space wreckage. While it keeps things light, Breathedge is a unique survival experience where players are asked, “Can you make a home out of a floating graveyard?”

As a free-to-keep game, claiming this Steam game will permanently add it to the user’s Digital Library to be played whenever. There’s seriously no benefit to NOT claiming this free game on Steam.

  • Release Date: February 25, 2021
  • Genre: Open-World Survival Crafting
  • Developer: RedRuins Softworks
  • Publisher: HypeTrain Digital
  • Steam Review Rating: 72% Mostly Positive (with 5K+ User Reviews)
  • Steam Link: Claim Breathedge for Free on Steam
  • Breathedge is Available to Add Permanently to Digital Libraries UNTIL August 9 at 12 pm CT. Claim and Keep Forever

Play NBA 2K26 for Free on Steam

nba-2k26-season-schedule-when-release-start

NBA 2K26 is the latest entry in 2K’s long-running basketball series, introducing updated gameplay, new modes, and more realistic on-court action powered by ProPLAY technology (which uses real NBA footage to improve player movement and animations). Players can build their own superstar in MyCAREER, create dream rosters featuring NBA and WNBA stars in MyTEAM, manage a franchise in MyNBA, or compete online across several returning multiplayer modes.

NBA 2K26 is available via a Steam Free-to-Play event, typically called a Free Weekend. Of course, this is more of a free week for NBA 2K26 since it is available to play completely free of charge until August 14, but fans should be sure to dive into it soon.

  • Release Date: September 5, 2025
  • Genre: Basketball Simulation
  • Developer: Visual Concepts
  • Publisher: 2K
  • Steam Review Rating: 72% Mostly Positive (with 13K+ user reviews)
  • Can you beat it before the Promotion ends? It’s possible, depending on how someone defends it, since NBA 2K26 features multiple game modes
  • Steam link: NBA 2K26 is Free to Play on Steam Until August 14

Play Now, MyNBA, and The W are available offline. All other game modes and features require an Internet connection and may require online account registration (varies 13+).

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that Moonlighter is also free to keep on Steam until August 9, with the game joining shortly before Breathedge‘s FTK Promotion and NBA 2K26‘s FTP event. Moonlighter is a roguelike dungeon crawler management hybrid game where players explore dungeons, face monsters, pick up loot, and sell that loot with management gameplay.
