Doom is one of the most influential first-person shooter franchises of all time, having helped define the genre when the original game launched in 1993. More than three decades later, id Software’s legendary Doom series remains a major name in gaming, with its brutal combat, demonic enemies, and heavy metal soundtracks continuing to attract players. The franchise has evolved considerably over the years, most recently with Doom: The Dark Ages, but one of its most celebrated entries remains the 2016 reboot, which launched on PS4, Xbox One, and Steam.

Released nearly a decade ago, Doom (2016) was a major turning point for the franchise, abandoning much of the slower, horror-focused approach of Doom 3 in favor of the aggressive, fast-paced combat that defined the original games. The reboot earned overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam and ultimately a 10/10 reputation that it upholds. Even with newer entries available, Doom remains worth revisiting, especially for players who have never experienced its campaign or want to see how id Software reinvented the series.

Doom: The Dark Ages Review

Doom: The Dark Ages is an eye-popping first-person shooter with nonstop action and some very welcome additions to the Slayer’s arsenal.

Now, Steam users will have a chance to claim Doom (2016) for free on October 28, courtesy of Lenovo’s Legion Gaming Community. The promotion begins at 9 AM PT/12 PM ET and will distribute a limited number of vouchers that can ultimately be redeemed for Steam keys. Normally priced at $19.99, Doom is being offered through one of Lenovo’s recurring Steam game giveaways, although interested players will need to meet a few requirements and act quickly to secure a copy.

To participate, users need a Lenovo Legion Gaming Community account and a verified Twitch account, with the Lenovo account linked to Gleam. Once the giveaway begins on October 28, eligible participants can visit Lenovo’s official promotion page and enter the queue for a voucher. Successful participants must then redeem their voucher through GamesPlanet to obtain a Steam key, which can be activated through Valve’s storefront. Lenovo has indicated that the queue should move faster than during previous giveaways, but the limited supply means not everyone is guaranteed a copy.

  • Link the Lenovo account to Gleam

There’s also a good reason Doom (2016) remains worth checking out nearly 10 years after its release, with many heralding it as a 10/10 masterpiece. As GameRant wrote in its Doom review, “the adrenaline-fueled gameplay and the ample replayability featured within the campaign make this a standout entry in the FPS genre [and] a worthwhile resurrection of DOOM.”

More Free Games on Steam

Steam users looking for more free games have several other options, as developers have begun making their previously paid titles permanently free to play. Heavy Wake is one of the latest examples, offering a short, dark-fantasy RPG with turn-based card battles, while Cartomancy Anthology brings together 22 bite-sized indie games inspired by tarot cards. Meanwhile, Phobos Down is a sci-fi twin-stick shooter, Jump Adventures is a colorful 2D platformer, and Cyberfrags ’69 delivers fast-paced cyberpunk FPS action. Unlike limited-time giveaways, all five games are now permanently free on Steam, meaning players can download them whenever they want.
