A 2D action platformer on Steam called Neon Knight: Vengeance From The Grave has offered users one last chance to claim and play it for free before it becomes a paid game. Neon Knight launched on Steam in 2018, but solo developer Marko Vukovic has since been working on an Ultimate Edition that is finally about to hit shelves.
In terms of gameplay, Neon Knight is comparable to classic 2D run and gun games. According to the developer, “Neon Knight blends the spirit of classic 2D games with modern 2D action mechanics and storytelling.” Players control a knight resurrected from the dead who can use both swords and firearms to take down his enemies.
Last Chance to Claim Neon Knight for Free on Steam
Nearly eight years after its initial release, Neon Knight will receive a major update that overhauls much of the game and transitions it from a free-to-play Steam game to a paid one. In a Steam Community note, Vukovic said, “With all [the Ultimate Edition] additions, the game is moving from a free to a paid model.” People who claim the game before the update can continue playing without paying. However, it remains unclear whether previous users will receive the Ultimate Edition for free. The developer also hasn’t explicitly announced a release date for the update but has said it is coming in a few weeks, giving Steam users a limited window to pick up the game for free.
Neon Knight‘s Steam reviews are fairly limited, but most are positive. The upcoming Ultimate Edition addresses some of the game’s issues based on player feedback, which could ultimately improve its user ratings. One notable feature coming with the update is Endurance Mode, which could potentially turn Neon Knight into a tiny game with high replay value. In Endurance Mode, waves of enemies attack the player, who must try and get the highest score by eliminating as many creatures as possible.

Other Free Steam Games to Claim in September 2026
Deadshot, Crystal Crisis, and Space Menace are the current games featured in Steam’s free-to-keep promotions for September. However, these are not the only titles users can claim and play at no cost. In fact, five other Steam games recently became free after previously being paid titles. These games are Tactical Mission: Target Rush, Journey Through The Nightmare Realm 2, Cosmo Chaser, Twin Trials, and Donut Smash. Purchasing all five would have cost about $22 USD before, but Steam users can add them to their libraries for $0.00.
September is not over yet, so there could still be more freebies on the way. October’s Steam promotions also appear to be shaping up, with at least three DLC bundles and a 2D cozy game called Fireside Feelings currently speculated to be going free-to-keep that month. However, these promotions are not set in stone, meaning some could be dropped while more offers could be added at any point.
