One of 2024’s flagship PlayStation titles, Stellar Blade, may be expanding to even more platforms in the future. Released in April 2024, Stellar Blade quickly became one of the year’s breakout titles, selling over a million units in its first two months on the market, a fantastic number for a smaller developer making its first proper console game. Developer Shift Up continued to support the game afterward with several pieces of DLC, including collaborations with games like Nier: Automata and the developer’s previous title, Goddess of Victory: Nikke.
Last June, Stellar Blade began to expand its reach beyond PlayStation, as the Sony-published title released on PC through Steam. This port brought it even greater success than it already had, reportedly selling a million copies in its first 72 hours on the market and pushing the game’s lifetime sales past the three-million mark. What’s more, its concurrent player count was higher than any other PlayStation-published title available on PC, including Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, and Marvel’s Spider-Man.
Stellar Blade Update Adds Surprise End Game Feature
A surprise update from developer Shift Up adds an interesting new feature to Stellar Blade that many fans will likely want to check out.
Stellar Blade May Be Coming to Xbox and Switch 2, More Sequel Details Incoming
In Shift Up’s latest financial report, the South Korean development team announced that it is reviewing a potential platform expansion for Stellar Blade. The developer celebrated Stellar Blade’s success as a “steady, long-tail IP,” noting that it has continued to see positive fan reception and strong sales numbers since its launch in April 2024. While not confirming specific releases on Xbox or Nintendo Switch 2, Shift Up noted that it was “reviewing platform expansion beyond PS5 and PC to broaden audience reach.”
Shift Up also indicated that its intention of reaching more platforms for Stellar Blade will not only help introduce the game to new audiences, but also get them excited about the upcoming sequel. A sequel to Stellar Blade was first announced last May, and while Shift Up has been largely silent about it since, this earnings report did confirm that its development is “progressing in a structured manner.” Fans may not have to wait long to see it either, as the developer confirmed that it is “reviewing plans to share additional details on the follow-up project within the year.”
Stellar Blade expanding to other platforms feels like a straightforward move by Shift Up to ensure the game’s popularity continues. Even with its status as a Sony-published first-party game, Stellar Blade doesn’t necessarily have any ties to the PlayStation as a system. Shift Up should therefore have no logistical problems bringing the game to other platforms. Furthermore, considering its rousing success across both PC and PlayStation, having the game available on all major platforms will enable it to continue selling well and reach a wider audience of players.
Shift Up’s impetus to release Stellar Blade on other platforms in preparation for the sequel may indicate its intention to release Stellar Blade 2 as a multiplatform game at launch. Naturally, with Sony Interactive Entertainment publishing Stellar Blade back in 2024, it was fair to assume that it would release exclusively for the PlayStation at launch. With the game’s success, however, Shift Up should have a greater say in the sequel’s release plans. Perhaps the arrival of the first Stellar Blade on Xbox and Switch 2 could be a promising sign that fans won’t have to wait several years post-release for Stellar Blade 2 to reach other platforms.
