Unknown Worlds Entertainment premiered yet another Subnautica 2 trailer, showcasing new gameplay footage from its upcoming title. The video may offer the final look at the much-anticipated open-world survival game before Subnautica 2‘s mid-May 2026 debut.
Formally announced in October 2024, the first full-fledged sequel to Subnautica (Below Zero technically started as DLC) was originally planned to launch in early access in 2025. However, Unknown Worlds’ parent company Krafton delayed it to 2026 last summer, around the same time it removed several studio leaders. Krafton said the delay was necessary because the game was not ready, while the ousted executives alleged the move was tied to acquisition-related earnout payments. A Delaware court later ruled that Krafton had breached the acquisition agreement, reinstated Subnautica 2 studio CEO Ted Gill, and left the remaining damages and bonus questions for a later phase. With that dispute partly resolved, the game is now scheduled to launch in early access on May 14, 2026.

Subnautica 2 Gets Another Gameplay Trailer Ahead of Early Access Release
In the lead-up to Subnautica 2‘s early access release, the underwater survival game received another gameplay trailer. Premiered on May 9, the 101-second video is focused on teasing some of the content and features players can expect from the May 14 build of the game, including a variety of colorful alien biomes to explore, new and returning Leviathan species to encounter, shiny lights to chase, and expeditions to embark on, either solo or in co-op.
New Subnautica 2 Trailer Earns Fan Praise for Atmosphere and Scale
Early online reactions to the trailer have been broadly positive, with some vocal fans saying the new footage helped reassure them that Subnautica 2 will remain close to the tone and structure of the 2018 original. Much of the ensuing discussion has centered on the game’s sense of scale, environmental storytelling, and apparent emphasis on exploration and danger, suggesting the trailer resonated with fans hoping for a more direct sequel rather than another heavily character-driven follow-up in the vein of Subnautica: Below Zero.
Some Fans Are Questioning Subnautica 2’s Brighter Look
Some viewers nevertheless noted that the upcoming title appears brighter and more saturated than the first game, prompting debate over whether Subnautica 2 will maintain the same oppressive deep-sea atmosphere that made the original so iconic. Others argued that the footage may have intentionally focused on shallower or early-game areas, leaving room for darker, more threatening regions to appear later in the early access roadmap. Fans have also begun parsing the trailer for story clues, theorizing about the sequel’s central mystery. The overall reaction indicates that Subnautica 2 is entering early access with strong interest, but also with high expectations informed by its critically acclaimed predecessor.
Multiple past statements from Unknown Worlds officials indicate that Subnautica 2 will remain in early access for approximately two or three years. That estimate is on par with the pre-release roadmaps for Subnautica and Below Zero. Apart from the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, the open-world co-op survival game will also be available via Xbox Cloud Gaming as a result of being a day-one Xbox Game Pass release.
