Surprise! Ubisoft is Launching The Division: Definitive Edition Today

Surprise! Ubisoft is Launching The Division: Definitive Edition Today

Ubisoft releases a Definitive Edition version of the original Tom Clancy’s The Division, though the shadow drop does seem to have one glaring omission. Originally released back in 2016, Ubisoft’s The Division introduced players to the dollar flu, a pandemic that swept through New York City on Black Friday, and eventually left the country in shambles. In response, the government activated the Strategic Homeland Division, sleeper agents tasked with restoring order.

The franchise would go on to be a big hit for Ubisoft, spawning a sequel in 2019 as well as a mobile spinoff and third game currently in development. In fact, The Division 2 is enjoying a bit of a renaissance at the moment, with a surging player base brought on by Massive Entertainment’s continued updates, seasonal content, Battle for Brooklyn expansion release, and special events like hosting a return to the Survival mode with unique rewards on offer. 2026 also represents the 10th anniversary for The Division and Ubisoft has teased announcements for this year, though a surprise Definitive Edition release has left more than a few fans a bit puzzled.

Division 3 Producer Was Hyping the Game as a “Monster” Just a Week Ago, But Now He’s Working on Battlefield

After discussing the future of The Division franchise for Ubisoft, Julian Gerighty announces that he’s left the company to join Battlefield Studios.

Ubisoft Shadow Launches The Division: Definitive Edition

Without any level of fanfare or marketing, the heavily rumored Definitive Edition of The Division is now available to purchase on online marketplaces like PlayStation, Steam, and Xbox. The description confirms that The Division: Definitive Edition includes the original 2016 game, all expansion pass content, and previously released cosmetic packs like the Sports Fan Outfit Pack or Parade Pack. Here’s the full list of content included in this:

  • Tom Clancy’s The Division
  • Season Pass
  • Season Pass Exclusive Outfits
  • Expansion I: Underground
  • Expansion II: Survival
  • Expansion III: Last Stand
  • Sawed-off Shotgun
  • Frontline Outfit Pack
  • Let it Snow Pack
  • Military Specialists Outfits Pack
  • Parade Pack
  • Sports Fan Outfit Pack
  • Streets of New York Outfit Bundle
  • Marine Forces Outfits Pack
  • Upper East Side Outfit Pack

Considering the franchise’s 10-year anniversary, releasing a new collection like this makes a lot of sense, especially for fans of the current game that may have missed out on some or all of the original game. However, The Division: Definitive Edition is essentially just the Gold Edition with the extra cosmetic and preorder packs included and isn’t a Remastered version that most fans were likely hoping for. While the Definitive Edition can be played on PS5 and Xbox Series X, there doesn’t appear to be native versions for these consoles, and it doesn’t offer any sort of performance upgrades to take advantage of the new hardware. There will probably be a bit of upscaling on the newer systems along with the recent Division performance boost patch, but those hoping to see other big improvements and upgrades will likely be disappointed that Ubisoft didn’t do more.

Regardless, many fans are hoping that Ubisoft and Massive have more planned to celebrate the franchise’s rapidly approaching anniversary date. There’s certainly plenty to look forward to for fans of the franchise with the upcoming Survivors game mode in development for The Division 2. Taking inspiration from the original extraction mode, Survivors aims to push things even further as Magnus Jansén and team transform the entire Washington, D.C. map with a massive blizzard that will push players to find a balance between looting with surviving the harsh and cold conditions.

Outside of Survivors, Massive Entertainment has also confirmed that The Division 3 is in active development. In fact, former executive producer Julian Gerighty admitted that The Division 3 is shaping up to be a monster. While Gerighty couldn’t provide any concrete details about the upcoming game, he did confirm that the team is working extremely hard, and he believes it’ll have as big of an impact as the original Division did. Having already been in development for a couple of years, there are at least a few fans who are hoping for some sort of sneak peek at the game as part of the franchise’s anniversary celebration.
