Nintendo has published its financial results for the nine months ended December 31, 2025, and, amid some impressive figures for its new Switch 2 hardware, it has confirmed that the original Switch is its best-selling console of all time. While it hasn’t dethroned the PS2 as the best-selling console of all time–160 million units sold–the Switch has reached a lifetime sales milestone of 155.37 million units.
This new figure has shifted the Nintendo DS to third place on the list of best-selling consoles, with the handheld having moved 154.02 million units during its lifetime. Nintendo predicts it will sell another 750,000 Switch consoles in the current fiscal year, which ends on April 1.
As for the Switch 2, sales numbers now stand at 17.37 million units sold-in during its first seven months on the market. That figure beats the Switch by a whopping 10 million units when timeframes are compared and the Switch 2 has already surpassed the lifetime sales of the Wii U console (13.56 million) in just a handful of months and is on track to beat the GameCube (21.74 million). While US Switch 2 sales were down by around 35% from November to December compared to Switch 1 sales during the same period, it is worth noting that November 2025 was the worst month for hardware sales in the US since 1995.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa added (via Reuters) that these factors could “pressure profitability” for the company, while Jefferies analyst Atul Goyal believes the company is better equipped to weather the demand for memory chips, as it has “sizable inventories and long-term contracts” to shield it for several more quarters.
As for games, Mario Kart World has reached 14 million units sold, around double what Mario Kart 8 Deluxe managed in the same time period–the game was sold on its own and as part of a Switch 2 bundle deal–Donkey Kong Bananza has sold 4.25 million units, and Kirby Air Riders has reached 1.76 million units sold since its November release. Pokemon Legends: Z-A reached 3.89 million units sold since its October release, but figures for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond have not yet been revealed.
