Based on the latest leaks and rumors, it seems as though a Super Smash Bros. game will arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2 within the next couple of years. Super Smash Bros. has been one of Nintendo’s premiere franchises since the days of the Nintendo 64 with the release of the original game. The party fighting game series reached new heights with the acclaimed Super Smash Bros. Melee on the GameCube, and it’s been on fire ever since.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii was a big hit, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U was one of the best-selling games on that failed console. Super Smash Bros. even enjoyed handheld success on the 3DS, with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Switch delivering the largest roster ever.

Rosalina’s big-screen debut brings more than just Lumas to the table. The Super Mario Galaxy movie is packed with deep-cut references to Smash Bros.

Super Smash Bros. Could Be Getting a New Release Soon

Now it seems the next Super Smash Bros. experience is right around the corner. Insider Kiwi Talkz recently took to Twitter and said that four of his favorite game franchises are going to be getting releases of some description “either soon or in a year or two.” He named Grand Theft Auto, which is getting GTA 6 in November, Metroid, which is rumored to have a new 2D game in the pipeline, and Zelda, which is rumored to be getting a substantial Ocarina of Time remake later this year and the movie in 2027. Kiwi Talkz also named Super Smash Bros., signaling that it will be out “in the next year or two.”

Kiwi Talkz then clarified that he did not mean that any of the upcoming games are necessarily “new,” suggesting that he could be referring to spin-offs, remasters, or “something on NSO.” If the latter is the case for Super Smash Bros., it would make sense to finally see the N64 Super Smash Bros. added to Nintendo Switch Online as was leaked ages ago. Of course, with Nintendo adding GameCube games to the Switch Online + Expansion Pack on Switch 2, one has to imagine that a Super Smash Bros. Melee release is potentially on the table at some point as well.

If it turns out that the Super Smash Bros. nod is just referring to an NSO release, it will likely disappoint fans. But unfortunately, it does seem like a brand-new, full-scale Super Smash Bros. Switch 2 exclusive release within the next two years is a little too ambitious. Super Smash Bros. series director Masahiro Sakurai just launched Kirby Air Riders as a Switch 2 exclusive at the end of 2025, and so that would be a remarkably fast turn-around time to get Smash Bros. out the door.

If we look at the timeline of Super Smash Bros. releases, the next game slipping into 2028 or beyond would make for the longest gap between releases. There were two years between the original and Melee, seven years between Melee and Brawl, six years between Brawl and the Wii U and 3DS games, and four years between those and Ultimate. It’s hard to say where a Switch 2 exclusive Super Smash Bros. would even go at this point, though. Ultimate was absolutely stuffed with content, so maybe Smash on Switch 2 will simply be a “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” of that game. Time will tell.
