Nintendo Switch 2 fans have been wondering when Google will push out a working YouTube app for the console, and they’ve grown so desperate that they’ve found a way to get it working in the meantime. However, anyone that cares about resolution will want to wait for an official version of YouTube for the Switch 2, as the current workaround is hard to look at.

While the original Nintendo Switch had its own YouTube app — an app that can even be downloaded onto Switch 2 consoles from players’ libraries — the app does not open and is completely unusable on the newer console. Google was unable to get a native version of YouTube ready in time for the Switch 2’s launch, and while one is confirmed to be in development, there is no official release window available. However, it’s been over a year since it was said to be coming “soon,” so it’s no surprise gamers have started searching for workarounds. Whenever the app finally arrives, there’s a good chance it supports high-quality video playback features like 4K and HDR, something that cannot be said for the browser version that players recently learned to access.

New Switch 2 Console Update is a Game-Changer

Nintendo releases a system update for the Switch 2, introducing a feature that can noticeably improve how Switch 1 games run on the console.

How to Access YouTube on Nintendo Switch 2

Reddit user JampyL recently shared their YouTube access trick on the Nintendo Switch 2 subreddit, showing a video playing and sharing their hopes that YouTube will “get it together” soon. Fortunately for those looking to make use of this Nintendo Switch 2 hack, recreating it is remarkably simple. To access YouTube on Switch 2, simply:

  • Download the free-to-play game Super Animal Royale.
  • Via the main menu, click on the playback icon within the News tab.
  • Click the option to watch the game’s news via YouTube.
  • Once redirected to YouTube, players will be free to search up whatever they desire.

If the cookie options aren’t behaving, multiple refreshes should do the trick.

It doesn’t seem like players are limited when it comes to what they watch on this version of YouTube, with anything from the classic gaming videos of Funhaus to current podcasts like the H3 Show being accessible. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t downsides to this hidden version of the platform. First, YouTube users will be limited to 360p versions. So, while audio-heavy videos will be viable, anything someone would want to see clearly will be rough to get through. Arguably even worse is the fact that users can’t sign in, meaning they have to search for every single video they want to watch manually instead of relying on their recommended feed or subscriptions.

Whenever a proper version of YouTube comes to Nintendo Switch 2, it’s safe to assume that it won’t have these same hiccups. Like with the original app, users will surely be able to sign in and watch all their favorite content creators on the tablet-like console with ease. Videos will likely be in even higher quality, too, given the more impressive screen and technology of the latest Nintendo hardware.

While not everyone will be satisfied with 360p videos that need to be manually searched up, this little hack could be worth it for anyone who really needs a spare screen for their video viewing. And for Super Animal Royale developer Pixile Studios, the extra boost in downloads could prove to be a nice surprise.
