Switch Just Confirmed the Release Date for Its Weirdest Game of 2026

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will officially launch on Nintendo Switch on April 16, 2026. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream‘s release date was announced during a 22-minute-long Nintendo Direct focused on the upcoming Nintendo Switch sequel.

The Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 have a busy few months ahead. Mario Tennis Fever is launching in February, Pokemon Pokopia is dropping a month later, and there are a plethora of other Switch games that have a general release window of 2026, such as The Duskbloods, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, and Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. There have also been growing rumors in the last few weeks that a full-length Nintendo Direct will take place in early February, meaning the Nintendo Switch’s release calendar could get a whole lot busier.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Gets an April 16 Release Date and Shows New Features

Along with confirming an April 16, 2026 release date, the Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Nintendo Direct gave fans a comprehensive breakdown of what they can expect from the long-awaited sequel. The Direct began with an overview of Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream‘s Mii customization features. Players can either answer a questionnaire to determine the appearance and personality traits of a Mii, or create a Mii from scratch using the creator tools provided. Some new tools were shown, such as the ability to use face paint to create some very unique Miis like a living teddy bear. This early portion of the latest Nintendo Direct also finally addressed a controversy that plagued the original Tomodachi Life on 3DS, confirming that same-sex relationships can now occur and that players can set their Miis’ dating preferences.

The crux of Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream‘s gameplay loop was then shown. Players can manually pick up and drop Miis next to each other to make them talk, they can click on a Mii’s thought bubble to find out what they’re thinking, and they can make choices that affect certain scenarios, such as a Mii asking another Mii out on a date. Players will also be able to gift their Miis ‘Little Quirks’, which affect behaviors like how they eat food, how they stand, or special phrases they use during conversation. Miis can also live together in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, which will bring out new behaviors in everyone involved.

The island that the Miis live on in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will change during the course of the game. Some Miis will ask for specific landscaping features to be added, and the player can also manually place their own items like fences and trees. The shape and size of the island can also be customized via one of Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream‘s buildings, of which there are a total of eight:

Fresh Kingdom — A grocery store where players can purchase food to give to their Miis
Where & Wear — A clothing store where players can find new outfits for their Miis
MiiNews — A building where players can watch bizarre news reports starring their Miis
T&C Reno — A furniture store where players can buy items to customize their Miis’ rooms
Marketplace — A store with randomized items
Foto-Tomo — A photo booth for Miis
Quik Build — A store where players can purchase landscape items to customize their island
Palette House — A store where players can personalize items and create new ones

Tomodachi Life‘s trademark bizarre humor shone through throughout the recent Nintendo Direct. The text-to-speech voices are still wonderfully strange, Mii dialogue is still jarring, and there are plenty of over-the-top moments shown during the Direct. The most notable is a sequence in which a Mii attempts to express their love for a clown called “Hugh Morris” on a moving Ferris wheel, only for them to be interrupted by several other Miis who show up out of nowhere to confess their love too. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will also be playable on Nintendo Switch 2 at launch, and pre-orders via the eShop will be available later today (January 29).
