Take-Two CEO Comments on Borderlands 4 Switch 2 Port Status

Take-Two’s CEO has commented on the status of the previously announced Nintendo Switch 2 port of Borderlands 4. Released last September, Borderlands 4 was the first mainline entry in Gearbox Software’s long-running looter-shooter franchise since 2019’s Borderlands 3. Despite positive early reviews and the franchise’s biggest launch to date, Take-Two admitted that its sales were somewhat softer than expected, though it expects the game to succeed in the long run.

While the Borderlands franchise has never had an entry launch simultaneously on a Nintendo platform, 2020’s Borderlands Legendary Collection brought the initial entries to the Nintendo Switch, while Borderlands 3 came to the Switch in 2023. During the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct last April, Take-Two and Gearbox Software confirmed that Borderlands 4 would see a release on the new platform in 2025. It was initially scheduled to release on October 3, but the port has since been indefinitely delayed, and Take-Two confirmed that its development is on pause.

Take-Two CEO Says Switch 2 Not a Primary Platform, Borderlands 4 Port Still Possible

In an interview with Stephen Totilo of Game File, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick commented on the Nintendo Switch 2 and the status of the previously promised Borderlands 4 port for the hybrid console. Zelnick notes that the delay of the Switch 2 version of the game was to address the PC version, which had been dealing with performance issues since its launch, and noted that Take-Two wanted to make sure that the game was as strong as possible before bringing it to other systems. He also confirmed that the development pause was not due to technical issues related to the Switch 2, claiming that a Borderlands 4 port is “doable.”

Zelnick, however, stopped short of offering any news as to when Nintendo players can expect Borderlands 4 to hit the Switch 2. Take-Two has been a strong early supporter of the Nintendo Switch 2, offering games such as Civilization 7 and sports titles like NBA 2K and WWE 2K on Nintendo’s platform. Still, Zelnick tells Totilo in the interview that Nintendo’s system is not the publisher’s main focus, saying, “You can tell from what we are doing and what we’re not doing that our primary console platforms remain Sony and Microsoft.”

In one breath, it’s good news that Borderlands 4’s Switch 2 delay isn’t due to technical hitches or issues with Nintendo’s hardware. The Switch 2 has proven to be a much more powerful machine than its predecessor, allowing it to host a massive library of third-party titles. Even though 2K Games doesn’t consider the system a “primary platform,” the publisher will still support the Switch 2 through its yearly sports titles.

Still, it’s disappointing to know that Borderlands 4’s Switch 2 port doesn’t have a release window in sight. Borderlands 4 was one of the major third-party titles promised at the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct in April 2025, with Gearbox president and CEO Randy Pitchford even appearing during the showcase. Time will tell whether Nintendo Switch 2 owners will get the previously promised chance to play Borderlands 4 on the hybrid system sooner rather than later.
