Take-Two CEO Reveals Why GTA 6 is Coming to Consoles Before PC

Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, reveals that GTA 6 will launch on consoles before PC because that player base is its core audience. Fans across the world have been hyped since the first trailer for GTA 6 was revealed on December 4, 2023. It quickly became the most viewed non-music video on YouTube in less than 24 hours, with many gamers sharing their excitement for the game on social media.

Since then, GTA 6 has received a second trailer and a few delays, with the game now coming out on November 19, 2026. By now, eagle-eyed fans have dissected both the trailers several times to share hidden details and Easter eggs, showcasing the hype behind one of the most anticipated games of all time.

GTA 6 CEO is “Terrified” of Its Release

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has some concerns about GTA 6’s release, specifically fan expectations around the game.

Take-Two CEO Explains GTA 6’s Console-First Release Strategy

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently spoke with Bloomberg during an interview about the decision to launch GTA 6 on consoles before releasing it on PC. He explained that the company’s primary focus is its core audience, which has traditionally been console players. According to Zelnick, a major release like GTA 6 is ultimately judged by how well it serves this core group first. If that audience is not satisfied from the start, it becomes much harder to expand the game’s success to other platforms later on.

He emphasized that prioritizing this base is not just a preference but a strategic approach. Delivering a polished experience to the most engaged players ensures a strong initial reception, which then supports broader rollout plans. Zelnick also addressed speculation about whether this console-first release for GTA 6 was tied to any marketing agreement with PlayStation. He dismissed that idea, clarifying that there is no such deal in place.

Instead, he pointed out that this approach aligns with Rockstar Games’ long-standing pattern, as the studio has historically launched its major titles on consoles before expanding to PC. Zelnick also highlighted how the importance of PC players has grown over time. He noted that when Take-Two was first starting out, PC sales made up only about 5% of total sales for the NBA 2K franchise. Today, however, that share has increased significantly, with PC accounting for roughly 45% to 50% of sales for major releases.

Rockstar Games has built a reputation over the years for prioritizing polish over punctuality, and that approach is once again under the spotlight with GTA 6. While the November 2026 release window for GTA 6 has given fans a clearer target, it hasn’t entirely eased concerns, especially given the studio’s history of pushing timelines to meet its own quality standards. A similar pattern played out during the development of Red Dead Redemption 2, which faced multiple delays before finally launching in October 2018.

At the time, those delays were framed as necessary steps to refine gameplay systems, improve narrative depth, and eliminate technical issues. In hindsight, many players agreed the extra time paid off, as the game went on to receive widespread critical acclaim and commercial success. However, the situation with GTA 6 feels more intense due to the sheer scale of anticipation surrounding the title.
